DRDO CEPTAM guide
What is DRDO CEPTAM?
DRDO CEPTAM (Centre for Personnel Talent Management) conducts centralised recruitment for technical and support staff positions in DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) laboratories and establishments across India. Posts include Senior Technical Assistant-B (STA-B), Technician-A, Admin & Allied Cadre, and Store & Purchase Assistant.
DRDO operates over 50 laboratories and establishments working on cutting-edge defence technologies: missile systems (Prithvi, Agni, Brahmos), radar and EW systems, armoured vehicles, naval systems, combat aircraft (Tejas with ADE), CBRN defence, food technology for soldiers, high-altitude research and advanced materials. Working at DRDO means contributing to India's strategic defence self-reliance.
STA-B posts require B.Sc/Diploma in relevant trade and are the most popular DRDO CEPTAM category with thousands of vacancies across cycles. Technician-A requires 10th pass + ITI in the relevant trade. Selection involves a two-tier CBT: Tier I is a screening test; Tier II is a subject-specific test (for STA-B) or trade test (for Technician-A).
The Tier I CBT has 150 questions covering Quantitative Ability & Numerical Reasoning (25q), Reasoning & Logical Deduction (25q), General Awareness (25q), English Language (25q) and General Science (50q). Tier II for STA-B covers in-depth technical questions for your specific subject/trade (Electronics, Mechanical, Chemistry, Computer Science, Administrative, etc.).
DRDO STA-B salary starts at Pay Level 6 (βΉ35,400-βΉ1,12,400 basic) with central government DA and allowances. In-hand salary is approximately βΉ50,000-βΉ60,000 per month. DRDO provides DGNCC/CGHS medical, subsidised housing at laboratory campuses where available, canteen, and LTC. Technician-A starts at Pay Level 2 (βΉ19,900).
How it works
DRDO CEPTAM selection process
Tier I CBT (screening)
150 questions in 2 hours at CBT centres. Sections: Quantitative Ability & Numerical Reasoning (25q), Reasoning & Logical Deduction (25q), General Awareness (25q), English Language (25q), General Science (50q). Negative marking: 0.25 per wrong answer. Used for shortlisting for Tier II.
Tier II CBT / Trade Test
For STA-B: Subject-specific CBT testing in-depth knowledge of your trade/discipline (Electronics Technology, Mechanical Technology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Store Management etc.). Duration and marks vary. For Technician-A: A hands-on trade test demonstrating practical skills in your ITI trade (electrician, fitter, welder etc.). Trade test is typically qualifying.
Document verification
Shortlisted candidates from Tier II submit original documents: degree/diploma/ITI certificate, marksheets, age proof, domicile, category certificate, NOC (if currently employed in government). Discrepancies lead to disqualification.
Posting
Selected candidates are posted to DRDO laboratories across India. Labs include DRDO HQ Delhi, DRDL Hyderabad (missiles), LRDE Bengaluru (radar), VRDE Ahmednagar (vehicles), CFEES Delhi (fire protection), DMRL Hyderabad (materials), INMAS Delhi (nuclear medicine) and 45+ other establishments.
Exam pattern
DRDO CEPTAM exam pattern
Tier I computer-based screening (quantitative ability, reasoning, general awareness, English and technical questions) followed by a Tier II technical test or trade test depending on the post.

Strategy
How to prepare for DRDO CEPTAM
01General Science (50 marks in Tier I) is the key differentiator
General Science carries 50 of 150 Tier I marks β the largest single section. This tests NCERT Class 9-12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology plus science current affairs. Study all three science subjects from NCERT and revise a short notes file weekly. Scoring 40+ in General Science almost guarantees shortlisting.
02Target your specific Tier II trade from Day 1
The Tier II technical CBT (for STA-B) is the merit-determining round. Many candidates only prepare for Tier I and are underprepared for Tier II. Start Tier II subject preparation simultaneously with Tier I. For Electronics: digital electronics, circuits and test equipment. For Computer Science: programming, OS and networking. Your Tier II score determines your DRDO lab posting.
03DRDO posts are pan-India β know where your preferred labs are
DRDO has 50+ labs across India. When applying, candidates select preferred labs from the notification. Research which labs work in your area of interest (missile systems, radar, materials, vehicles etc.) and list them in your preference. Posting is based on merit rank and vacancy at your preferred labs.
04General Awareness must include DRDO-specific content
The GA section tests current events + DRDO/defence technology awareness. Know: DRDO's major projects (Agni-V, Tejas, Brahmos, QRSAM, MRSAM), DRDO labs and their specialisations, famous DRDO scientists (Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam), DRDO founding year (1958) and recent missile tests. Add a DRDO-specific GK section to your notes.
05Trade test for Technician-A: practise hands-on skills
For Technician-A posts (ITI qualified), the trade test is a practical demonstration. If applying as an Electrician, practise wiring circuits, measuring resistance and troubleshooting faults. If applying as a Fitter, practise fitting operations within tolerances. Practical skills that are rusty from theory-only preparation will show in the trade test.
