IBPS PO guide
What is IBPS PO?
IBPS PO (Probationary Officer) is conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection to recruit Probationary Officers and Management Trainees in 11 public-sector banks β Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, Bank of India, Central Bank, Indian Bank, UCO Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, Indian Overseas Bank, and Punjab & Sind Bank.
IBPS PO is one of the most popular bank exams in India, with 10β15 lakh candidates competing for roughly 3,000β5,000 vacancies every year. The exam has three stages: a qualifying Prelims, a merit-deciding Mains (with a descriptive English paper), and an interview.
After selection, POs go through a 2-year probationary period with structured training. On confirmation, they are posted as Assistant Managers (Scale I). With good performance, POs can reach Chief Manager (Scale IV) in 12β15 years and General Manager level in 20+ years.
IBPS PO starting salary (JMG Scale I) is βΉ36,000 basic pay. After DA, HRA, special allowance, city compensatory allowance, and medical allowance, gross in-hand pay is approximately βΉ52,000ββΉ62,000 per month in metro cities (varies by bank and city posting).
IBPS PO offers the ideal combination of job security, good starting pay, clear promotion structure, and the prestige of a public-sector banking career. Officers also receive perks like subsidised home loans, medical insurance, and LFC.
How it works

How to prepare for IBPS PO
01Master Data Interpretation early
DI carries 35 questions in Mains and is the most time-consuming section. Practice bar charts, pie charts, tables, and mixed graphs daily. Speed and accuracy together decide your Mains score.
02Build a strong Reasoning foundation
Mains Reasoning has complex multi-variable puzzles and seating arrangements. Spend 45 minutes daily on Puzzle practice β do at least 3 complex puzzles per day from IBPS PO previous year papers.
03Read for the descriptive paper
The 30-minute descriptive paper (letter + essay) is attempted by almost everyone but very few score 20+. Practice writing 2 essays and 2 formal letters per week. Read economic newspaper editorials for content.
04Prepare Banking Awareness like static GK
Banking GK (40 questions, 40 marks in Mains) is fully predictable β RBI rates, bank headquarters, new schemes, and current affairs. Make notes from a bank awareness capsule and revise weekly.
05Clear sectional cut-offs in Prelims
Getting 90/100 in Prelims but failing the English sectional cut-off means rejection. Practice all three sections β do not ignore English or Quant even if you are strong in Reasoning.
06Use elimination in interview prep
The IBPS PO interview tests personality, banking knowledge, and current affairs. Prepare your introduction, know about your home state's economy, and revise RBI policies.
