GATE guide
What is GATE?
GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is jointly conducted by IISc Bangalore and the seven IITs on a rotation basis. It is India's most recognised postgraduate engineering entrance exam β testing the depth of understanding of undergraduate engineering and science subjects across 30 subject papers.
A strong GATE score opens three major doors: M.Tech/MS/PhD admission at IITs, NITs and IISc (often with a monthly stipend of βΉ12,400-βΉ37,000 for GATE scholars), recruitment by prestigious Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like BHEL, HPCL, IOCL, GAIL, NTPC, PGCIL, BEL, SAIL and BARC, and shortlisting for certain central government research and technical jobs.
The exam is a 3-hour Computer-Based Test with 65 questions worth 100 marks. Question types include Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ, +1 or +2 marks, -1/3 or -2/3 negative marking), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ, partial/full marking, no negative) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT, no negative marking). All papers include a General Aptitude section (15 marks) and the core engineering/science section (85 marks).
GATE is held every February. GATE scores are valid for 3 years from the date of declaration. Candidates can appear in one or two papers (from the allowed two-paper combinations). The score is normalised and converted to a percentile/rank basis. Top IITs require GATE ranks within 100-500 in popular branches like CS, Electronics and Mechanical for direct M.Tech admission.
For PSU recruitment through GATE, companies screen candidates based on GATE score, shortlist for Group Discussion/Personal Interview, and select. Starting salary at PSU (for M.Tech or GATE-qualified B.Tech) ranges from βΉ50,000-βΉ70,000 in-hand per month at junior engineer level, rising significantly with promotions. GATE also unlocks DRDO Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and similar research tracks.
How it works
GATE selection process
Registration & paper selection
Apply on gate.iitX.ac.in (current organising IIT). Choose 1 or 2 papers from the allowed combinations. Upload documents, pay fee and download admit card.
GATE exam (February)
3-hour CBT at designated test centres. 10 GA questions (15 marks) + 55 subject questions (85 marks). MCQ, MSQ and NAT types. Virtual calculator provided on screen. No physical calculator allowed.
Score card (March)
GATE score card released approximately 3-4 weeks after the exam. Contains raw marks, GATE score (normalised), All-India Rank (AIR) and subject-wise performance. Valid for 3 years.
M.Tech / PSU / Research applications
Apply through COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) or CCMT (Centralised Counselling for M.Tech) for institute admissions. Apply directly to PSUs (BHEL, HPCL, NTPC etc.) as they release GATE-score-based recruitment notifications. DRDO JRF, CSIR labs and BARC also use GATE for research positions.

Strategy
How to prepare for GATE
01Previous GATE papers are the best study material
GATE questions are conceptual, application-based and often directly adapted from previous years. Solving 10+ years of previous GATE papers for your subject is more effective than reading reference books repeatedly. Analyse every wrong answer β understand the concept, not just the answer.
02General Aptitude (15 marks) is free marks β do not skip
GA is the same across all GATE papers: 10 questions, 15 marks, no specialisation required. A focused 1-week preparation of English grammar, verbal reasoning and basic maths can fetch you 12-15 marks. Many engineers neglect GA and lose this easy advantage.
03Identify your NAT-heavy topics β they have no negative marking
Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions require typing an exact number β no options given, no negative marking. If you are unsure in NAT, you can still attempt since there is no penalty. Identify which GATE topics usually come as NAT in your subject and practise those without worrying about accidental wrong marks.
04Target PSU through GATE alongside M.Tech
Many students prepare for GATE only with M.Tech in mind and miss PSU notification deadlines. BHEL, HPCL, IOCL, GAIL, NTPC all release GATE-based recruitment notifications in February-April just after results. Monitor these PSU websites and apply immediately β seats fill fast.
05Study the complete GATE syllabus β do not skip any topic
GATE has a defined official syllabus published each year. Every topic in the syllabus is fair game. Candidates who skip "difficult" topics like Control Systems (ECE) or Theory of Computation (CS) often miss 10-15 marks that could change their rank by hundreds. Cover the complete syllabus even if some topics need extra time.
FAQs
GATE: frequently asked questions
How many papers can I take in GATE?
You can appear in one or two papers from the allowed two-paper combinations listed in the official GATE brochure. The two-paper combination must be from the permitted list β not all combinations are allowed.
Is there a virtual calculator in GATE?
Yes. Only the on-screen virtual calculator provided in the CBT interface is allowed. Personal calculators, mobile phones and all electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside the exam hall.
What is a good GATE score for IIT M.Tech?
For top IITs (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur), you typically need a rank within 100-500 in popular branches (CS, ECE, Mechanical, Chemical). For NITs, ranks up to 2,000-5,000 in most branches are competitive. For PSU recruitment cut-offs, it varies by company and branch.
What is the GATE score vs marks difference?
GATE "marks" is your raw score out of 100. GATE "score" is a normalised value on a 1,000-point scale, adjusted for difficulty across sessions if applicable. The score is used for PSU recruitment and institute admissions. The All-India Rank (AIR) tells you your absolute position.
Can I use my GATE score for PSU recruitment?
Yes. Major PSUs including BHEL, HPCL, IOCL, GAIL, NTPC, PGCIL, BEL, SAIL, NALCO, MECL and BARC release recruitment notifications and shortlist candidates based on valid (within 3-year) GATE scores. Check each PSU's own recruitment website for current opportunities.
Is GATE score valid for 3 years?
Yes. The GATE score card is valid for 3 years from the date of result declaration. You can use the same score to apply for PSU or M.Tech admissions over this period without re-appearing.
What is the GATE M.Tech stipend?
MHRD-sponsored M.Tech students at IITs, NITs and IISc receive a monthly stipend of βΉ12,400 per month (for M.Tech) or βΉ37,000 (for PhD/MS by Research β GATE qualified JRF). Stipend amounts may vary β check the current Institute-specific offer.
Does ISRO or DRDO use GATE scores?
BARC (Department of Atomic Energy) uses GATE scores for its OCES/DGFS shortlisting. DRDO JRF positions also use GATE. ISRO typically conducts its own separate written test (ISRO Centralised Recruitment) and generally does not use GATE scores.
Can final-year students appear for GATE?
Yes. Students in the final year of B.E./B.Tech/M.Sc or equivalent are eligible. They can appear in GATE and use the score for admissions or PSU applications, but must complete their degree within the stipulated deadline.
What subjects can I take GATE in?
GATE offers 30 papers including: Aerospace Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Architecture, Biomedical, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Ecology, Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, Environmental Science, Geomatics, Geology, Instrumentation, Mathematics, Mechanical, Mining, Metallurgy, Naval Architecture, Petroleum, Physics, Production, Statistics, Textile, and XH (Humanities & Social Sciences).
