SBI PO guide
What is SBI PO?
SBI PO is the Probationary Officer recruitment of the State Bank of India β India's largest bank by assets, branches, and employees. It is the most prestigious bank exam in India, drawing 20β25 lakh applicants for roughly 2,000 vacancies, making it extremely competitive.
SBI PO has three phases: Phase I (Prelims, qualifying), Phase II (Mains, objective + descriptive), and Phase III (Group Exercise + Interview). The three-phase selection is more rigorous than IBPS PO, particularly in Phase III.
After 2 years of probation, SBI POs are confirmed as Junior Management Grade Scale I officers. SBI offers one of the best promotion structures in Indian banking, with opportunities to reach General Manager in 20 years and MD/CEO over a full career.
SBI PO starting salary (JMG Scale I) is βΉ36,000 basic. Gross in-hand with DA, HRA, city compensatory allowance, and other perks is approximately βΉ65,000ββΉ75,000 in metro cities, making it one of the highest bank starting salaries in India.
How it works
SBI PO selection process
Phase I β Prelims (qualifying)
100 questions, 60 minutes. Three sections with 20-minute sectional timing. Qualifying β shortlists for Phase II.
Phase II β Mains (merit)
Objective sections (200 marks, 3 hours) plus a descriptive English paper (50 marks, 30 minutes). Mains determines Phase III shortlisting.
Phase III β Group Exercise + Interview
Group Exercise (20 marks) assessing leadership and communication; Interview (30 marks). Final merit: Mains 60% + GE 20% + Interview 20% (approximate weightage varies).

How to prepare for SBI PO
01SBI Mains Reasoning is the toughest section
SBI Mains puzzles are notoriously complex β multi-condition puzzles with 6β8 variables are common. Practice 4β5 complex puzzles daily for at least 45 days before Mains.
02Score well in descriptive English
The 30-minute descriptive paper (essay + letter, 50 marks) is a direct differentiator. Practice writing on topics like banking reforms, digital payments, financial inclusion, and economic issues.
03Prepare for Group Exercise seriously
GE tests leadership, listening, and teamwork under time pressure. Join group discussion practice groups online. Maintain a calm, constructive tone and avoid interrupting others.
04Study SBI-specific GK
SBI Mains GK includes questions specific to SBI β its history, products (Yono, SBI Life, SBI Card), associates, subsidiaries, and MD & CEO. Add these to your banking GK notes.
