SSC CGL guide
What is SSC CGL?
SSC CGL (Staff Selection Commission Combined Graduate Level) is India's most popular central government exam for graduates, conducted by the Staff Selection Commission every year. It fills Group B and Group C gazetted and non-gazetted posts across central ministries, departments, and organisations β including the Income Tax Department, Central Secretariat, CAG, CBI, MEA, and more.
Over 30 lakh candidates compete each year for roughly 14,000β17,000 vacancies, making SSC CGL one of the most competitive graduate-level government exams in the country. Posts are allotted by final merit rank and preference β so the higher you score in Tier 2, the better your chances of getting a preferred post.
Selection happens in two computer-based stages. Tier 1 (100 questions, 60 minutes) is a qualifying screening test across four sections. Tier 2 is the merit-deciding paper: Paper I covers Maths, Reasoning, English, General Awareness and Computer Knowledge for all posts, while Paper II (Statistics) and Paper III (General Studies: Finance & Economics) are only for JSO and AAO posts respectively.
SSC CGL salary ranges from Pay Level 4 (βΉ25,500) to Pay Level 8 (βΉ47,600) depending on the post. The most preferred posts β Assistant Section Officer (CSS), Income Tax Inspector, Inspector GST/Central Excise, Inspector (Preventive Officer/Examiner) β are all at Pay Level 7 (βΉ44,900ββΉ1,42,400 basic), with gross in-hand pay of βΉ55,000ββΉ75,000 per month in metro cities after allowances.
After joining, CGL officers enjoy job security, grade-pay promotions, government housing (HRA otherwise), medical facilities, LTC, and pension. Many Income Tax Inspectors and ASOs move into senior positions like Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax (DCIT) and Under Secretary through departmental exams within 8β12 years.
How it works
SSC CGL selection process
Tier 1 β CBT (qualifying)
Four sections of 25 questions each (GI&R, GK, Quant, English), 60 minutes composite. Qualifying β used only to shortlist candidates for Tier 2.
Tier 2 β CBT (merit)
Paper I for all posts: Session I (Maths+Reasoning, 3 hours) and Session II (English+GK+Computer, 2 hours 15 min). Paper II (Statistics, JSO only) and Paper III (Finance & Economics, AAO only) are on the same day.
Skill test (selected posts)
CPSE/DEO speed test for posts like Data Entry Operator and Tax Assistant. Qualifying; not counted in merit.
Document verification
Final certificates, category proof, and eligibility checked before post allotment by merit and post preference.

Strategy
How to prepare for SSC CGL
01Master Tier 2 Maths first
Tier 2 Paper I Section I carries 180 marks β the highest weight. Topics like Trigonometry, Geometry, and Mensuration appear every year. Spend at least 2 hours daily on Maths in the final 60 days.
02Build an English vocabulary habit
SSC CGL English (135 marks in Tier 2) rewards students who read daily. Follow a word-a-day habit and read one editorial from The Hindu or Indian Express to improve reading comprehension and idiom recognition.
03Nail the GK static topics
SSC GK questions repeat from SSC previous years. Make a one-page sheet of repeated topics: Awards, Books & Authors, Important Days, Headquarters. Revise it weekly.
04Practice mock tests under exam conditions
The 60-minute Tier 1 timing (36 seconds per question) is the real challenge. Attempt at least 15 full-length Tier 1 mocks and analyse every error. Accuracy above 90% should be the target.
05Prioritise accuracy over speed
With 0.50 negative marking, attempting 85 questions at 92% accuracy beats attempting 100 at 80%. Track your accuracy section-wise in every mock test.
06Study Tier 2 Computer Knowledge
It is a 20-question qualifying module but easily clears the bar with 2β3 days of focused revision on MS Office, Internet basics, Networking and Computer fundamentals.
