Defence Exams: How They Work, Pattern, Subjects & Preparation

Defence exams are the entry points into the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force — as commissioned officers through NDA, CDS and AFCAT, or as soldiers, sailors and airmen through the Agnipath (Agniveer) scheme.

Officer selection always has two halves: a written exam that tests knowledge, and the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview that tests personality, intelligence and officer-like qualities over several days. A medical examination follows. Physical fitness matters at every level.

Conducted byUPSC, Indian Air Force, Army & Navy
ModeOffline (UPSC) or online CBT
FrequencyNDA & CDS twice a year
Eligibility12th pass (NDA) / graduation (CDS, AFCAT)

How it works

How Defence selection works, step by step

Written exam

UPSC conducts NDA and CDS; the Air Force runs AFCAT online. Agniveer candidates take an online Common Entrance Exam.

SSB interview (officers)

A five-day assessment: screening (intelligence test, picture perception and discussion), psychological tests, group tasks and a personal interview.

Medical examination

A detailed medical at a military hospital. Eyesight, height-weight and general fitness standards differ by service and branch.

Merit list

Written and SSB marks are added to form the final merit list (for NDA and CDS). Joining depends on rank and vacancies.

Training

Selected candidates join NDA Khadakwasla, IMA Dehradun, INA Ezhimala, AFA Hyderabad or OTA Chennai, depending on the entry.

Strategy

How to prepare for Defence exams

01Give GAT and GK equal weight

In NDA, GAT is worth 600 marks — twice the Maths paper. Many candidates over-prepare Maths and lose rank in GAT.

02NCERT is your GK base

Class 6–10 NCERT history, geography, polity and science cover most of the static GK asked in NDA and CDS.

03Prepare for SSB from day one

The SSB carries more marks than the written exam. Practise speaking clearly, reading the newspaper and discussing issues in groups.

04Fitness is non-negotiable

Running, push-ups and endurance help in SSB group tasks and are mandatory for Agniveer rallies. Train daily.

05Check medical standards early

Eyesight, height and weight requirements differ by service. Know them before you invest months of preparation.
