Civil Services & State PSC Exams: How They Work, Pattern & Preparation
Civil services exams select administrators — IAS, IPS, IFS and allied services through UPSC, and Deputy Collectors, DSPs and other state-level officers through each State Public Service Commission (PSC) such as UPPSC, MPSC, BPSC and RPSC.
They are the longest selection processes in India: an objective Prelims to shortlist, a descriptive Mains to test depth and writing, and an interview for personality. Preparation usually takes one to two years, and the same core study serves UPSC and your state PSC.

How it works
How State PSC selection works, step by step
Prelims (screening)
Objective papers on General Studies and aptitude (CSAT). Marks only decide who qualifies for Mains — they do not count in the final merit.
Mains (descriptive)
Written answer papers: essay, general studies papers, an optional subject (UPSC and some states), and qualifying language papers.
Interview / personality test
A board assesses awareness, judgement, ethics and suitability for public service.
Final merit
Mains + interview marks decide rank, and rank decides service and cadre allocation.
UPPSC PCS, MPSC Rajyaseva, BPSC CCE, RPSC RAS and other state civil services recruit Deputy Collectors, DSPs, Block Development Officers and similar posts.
Most follow the UPSC model — an objective Prelims (General Studies, often with a qualifying CSAT paper), a descriptive Mains and an interview — but the number of papers, the optional subject rule, negative marking and the weight of state-specific GK (history, geography, economy and culture of that state) vary. Always read your state commission's latest notification.

How to prepare for State PSC exams
01NCERTs first, then standard books
Class 6–12 NCERTs build the base for every subject. Move to standard reference books only after.
02Integrate Prelims and Mains
Study each topic for both stages together — facts for Prelims, analysis and answer-writing for Mains.
03Write answers every week
Mains is a writing exam. Practise timed answers (150–250 words) weekly and get them reviewed.
04Don't neglect CSAT
CSAT is qualifying but has eliminated many strong GS candidates. Take a few CSAT mocks well before Prelims.
05Cover your state for PSC exams
State PSCs ask a large share of questions on the state's history, geography, economy and schemes. Add a state-specific book to your list.
