AFCAT guide
What is AFCAT?
AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test) is the Indian Air Force's own selection examination for commissioned officer entries, conducted twice a year (AFCAT 1 in February, AFCAT 2 in August). It recruits officers for the Flying Branch (fighter, transport and helicopter pilots), the Ground Duty Technical branch (Aeronautical Engineer β Mechanical and Electronics) and the Ground Duty Non-Technical branch (Administration, Logistics, Accounts, Education, Meteorology).
The online test has 100 questions worth 300 marks with a 2-hour time limit, testing General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability, and Reasoning & Military Aptitude. Ground Duty Technical candidates additionally take the Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT) β a 50-question, 150-mark, 45-minute paper in their engineering discipline (Mechanical or Electronics).
Shortlisted candidates are called for the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB), a five-day interview at Varanasi, Mysuru, Gandhinagar or Dehradun. Flying-branch candidates also undergo CPSS (Computerised Pilot Selection System) β a once-in-a-lifetime aptitude test for pilot selection conducted on Day 1 of AFSB.
Post selection, Flying Officers (Pilots) undergo pre-flying training at Air Force Academy (AFA) Dundigal (about 15 months) followed by operational flying training on fighter or transport aircraft. Ground Duty Technical officers undergo technical training after AFA. All entries lead to a Permanent Commission in the Indian Air Force.
The starting salary of an Indian Air Force officer is competitive: Flying Officer (rank after commissioning) draws Basic βΉ56,100 + MSP βΉ15,500. Pilots get an additional Flying Allowance. With HRA + DA + transport allowance, in-hand salary comes to βΉ90,000-βΉ1,10,000 per month in a typical city posting.
How it works
AFCAT selection process
AFCAT online exam
100 questions (300 marks) in 2 hours at CDAC online test centres. Sections: General Awareness (24q), Verbal Ability in English (24q), Numerical Ability (18q), Reasoning & Military Aptitude (34q). EKT for Technical candidates immediately after AFCAT β 50 questions in 45 minutes in Mechanical or Electronics stream.
AFSB interview (5 days)
Day 1: Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) + CPSS (Flying candidates only β once in a lifetime). Day 2-5: Psychological tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, Self Description), Group Tasks (GD, GPE, PGT, HGT, command task, lecturette), Personal Interview by the President. Three-tier assessment similar to Army/Navy SSB.
CPSS (Flying Branch only)
Computerised Pilot Selection System β assesses spatial reasoning, instrument interpretation, dual-task handling and basic pilot aptitude. Conducted at AFSB on Day 1. If a candidate fails CPSS, they are screened out for the Flying Branch for life β it cannot be retaken. They may still be assessed for Ground Duty if also applied.
Medical examination
Conducted at Air Force medical boards. Flying Branch demands near-perfect vision (6/6, no glasses), normal colour vision and very strict ENT standards. Ground Duty branches have more relaxed standards.
Training at AFA Dundigal
All AFCAT entries undergo officer training at Air Force Academy (AFA), Dundigal, Telangana. Flying branch cadets proceed to advanced flying training (Hawk trainer aircraft). Technical and Non-Technical officers proceed to branch-specific training after commissioning.

How to prepare for AFCAT
01Add IAF-specific content to your GK notes
AFCAT GA strongly favours Indian Air Force questions: aircraft in service (Rafale, Tejas, C-17 Globemaster), IAF exercises (Garuda, Vajra Prahar), and IAF history. Add an "IAF Special" section to your GK notes and revise it weekly.
02CPSS cannot be retaken β prepare early
If you are targeting the Flying Branch, understand that CPSS is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. The test assesses visual processing, spatial orientation and multi-tasking under pressure. Do spatial reasoning puzzles daily. Do NOT appear for CPSS if your eyesight does not meet Air Force medical standards β consult an aviation optometrist first.
03Master Reasoning β the largest section at 34 questions
Reasoning & Military Aptitude has 34 of 100 questions β the largest section. The questions lean military in context and include spatial/visual reasoning unlike typical banking exams. Solve previous AFCAT papers to recognise the pattern.
04EKT (Technical): target 90%+ for a strong merit rank
EKT tests 3rd/4th-year engineering topics at a basic level. Since AFCAT + EKT marks are combined for Technical shortlisting, a good EKT score (135+/150) dramatically improves your merit position. Study core subjects from your own engineering notes β Thermodynamics, Circuits or Electromagnetics based on your branch.
05Build a daily current affairs habit 6 months out
AFCAT GA includes events from the last 6 months. Use a monthly current affairs PDF from a reliable source and revise it weekly. Focus on science and technology news, defence acquisitions, international exercises and government schemes.

FAQs
AFCAT: frequently asked questions
What is the AFCAT exam pattern?
AFCAT is a 100-question, 300-mark, 2-hour online exam. It covers General Awareness (24q), Verbal Ability in English (24q), Numerical Ability (18q) and Reasoning & Military Aptitude (34q). Marking: +3 correct, β1 wrong. EKT (50q, 150m, 45 min) is additional for Technical branch aspirants.
Can a science graduate apply for AFCAT Flying Branch?
Yes, if you have Physics and Mathematics in 12th at 60%. Any graduation stream is acceptable for the Flying Branch as long as the 12th criteria is met.
What is the age limit for AFCAT?
Flying Branch: 20-24 years at the time of commissioning. Ground Duty (Technical and Non-Technical): 20-26 years. The Flying branch upper age is strict and cannot be relaxed.
What happens if I fail CPSS?
If you fail CPSS on Day 1 of AFSB, you are screened out for the Flying Branch for life β CPSS cannot be retaken. If you had also applied for a Ground Duty branch in the same cycle, the AFSB may still assess you for that branch.
How many times can I appear for AFCAT?
IAF does not specify a fixed number of AFCAT attempts. The practical limit is the age window. CPSS, however, is a once-in-a-lifetime chance.
Is AFCAT harder than CDS?
They test similar topics but AFCAT is slightly more Air Force-specific in GK and has a stronger Reasoning component. CDS has three separate 100-mark papers; AFCAT combines all into one 100-question paper.
Can women apply for AFCAT?
Yes. Women can apply for Ground Duty Technical and Ground Duty Non-Technical branches. The Flying Branch has been opened to women β check the current notification for eligibility and available slots.
What is the in-hand salary after AFCAT commissioning?
Flying Officer: Basic βΉ56,100 + MSP βΉ15,500 = βΉ71,600 basic. With HRA + DA + transport allowance, in-hand is approximately βΉ90,000-βΉ1,10,000 in a city posting. Flying Branch officers also get Flying Allowance when actively flying.
Is there negative marking in AFCAT?
Yes. +3 for a correct answer and -1 for a wrong answer. In EKT as well: +3 correct, -1 wrong. Do not guess randomly.
What is EKT in AFCAT?
The Engineering Knowledge Test, taken only by Ground Duty Technical candidates. It covers 50 questions in 45 minutes in your engineering discipline β Mechanical or Electronics. Marks from AFCAT + EKT are combined for Technical branch shortlisting.
