What is Agniveer Army?
Agniveer Army is the soldier-level entry into the Indian Army under the Agnipath Scheme, launched in June 2022. It recruits young men and women aged 17.5-21 years for a four-year term of service, replacing all earlier Regular Army soldier recruitment schemes including ARO rallies for General Duty (GD), Technical, Clerk and Tradesmen categories.
Categories under Agniveer Army include General Duty (GD β the largest category requiring 10th pass), Technical (requiring 12th with Science), Clerk/Store Keeper Technical (SKT β requiring 12th at 60%) and various Tradesman roles such as chef, washerman and others requiring 8th or 10th pass. Each category has a separate written exam syllabus, physical standards and pay scale.
Selection involves two phases: Phase 1 β Online Common Entrance Exam (CEE) at testing centres; Phase 2 β Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and Medical at a recruitment rally; followed by merit-based joining. There is no SSB-style interview for soldier-level Agniveer entries.
At the end of four years, up to 25% of each batch may be selected for a Regular Cadre 15-year engagement based on performance, medical fitness and available vacancies. The remaining 75% exit with a tax-free Seva Nidhi package of approximately βΉ11.71 lakh composed of the Agniveer's own monthly contribution plus an equal government contribution.
Monthly pay for Agniveers starts at βΉ30,000 in Year 1, rising to βΉ40,000 in Year 4. After deducting the Seva Nidhi contribution, take-home in Year 1 is approximately βΉ21,000. Risk and hardship allowances, free rations, accommodation and clothing are provided separately. Retention in Regular Cadre (25%) gives pension, ECHS medical benefits and all other regular soldier benefits.

Online Common Entrance Exam (CEE)
Objective MCQ exam at designated centres. GD: 50 questions, 100 marks, 60 min (GK/GS 30q + Maths 15q + Reasoning 5q). Technical: 50 questions covering Science & Maths. Clerk/SKT: 50 questions covering GK, Maths, English and Computer. Negative marking applies as per the current notification.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
Conducted at a recruitment rally: 1.6 km run (Group I: under 5:30 for 60 marks; Group II: 5:30-5:45 for 48 marks), 10 pull-ups, 9-foot ditch balance and zig-zag run. Physical standards vary slightly by category.

Medical examination
Army standard medical conducted at the rally. Height minimum 160 cm for GD. Checks weight, vision, dental health, hearing and general fitness. Category-specific requirements apply.

Merit & joining
A combined merit list is prepared from CEE marks + PFT marks. Candidates are called for document verification in merit order. On clearing, they receive an allotment to a regimental training centre for basic military training.

How to prepare for Agniveer Army
01Physical fitness from Day 1
The 1.6 km run is the biggest eliminator in Agniveer recruitment. Even candidates who ace the written exam get eliminated for slow run timing. Start a running programme 3-4 months before the rally: build to completing 1.6 km under 5:30 comfortably. Do pull-ups daily β target 16+.
02Focus GK on defence, current events and science
Agniveer GD CEE has 15 GK questions and 15 GS questions. Prepare a one-page sheet of Important Defence Days, Army operations, Indian geography basics and NCERT-level science (force, electricity, chemical reactions, biology terms). Revise this sheet daily in the last 3 weeks.
03Solve 5+ previous CEE papers
The Agniveer CEE follows a consistent pattern year-on-year. Previous papers from Arihant, Kiran and Lucent publications reveal exactly which Maths topics repeat (percentages, averages, time-work, ratios). The question level is 10th CBSE standard.
04Reach the rally with complete documents
Missing even one document (photo, certificate, Aadhaar) at the rally venue causes immediate disqualification with no second chance that day. Prepare three sets of all documents (original + self-attested photocopies) in a plastic folder before travelling to the rally.
05Understand the 25% retention criteria early
If you are aiming to be in the 25% retained for Regular Cadre, your performance in training, annual assessments and discipline record during 4 years will decide retention. Study well during military training β academic tests in training also matter.
