Agniveer Navy guide
What is Agniveer Navy?
Agniveer Navy recruits sailors into the Indian Navy under the Agnipath Scheme for a four-year term. The two main entries are Agniveer Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR), which requires 12th pass with PCM or PCM with Computer Science, and Agniveer Matric Recruit (MR), which requires only 10th pass and covers trades like Chef, Steward and Hygienist.
Approximately 2,500-3,000 Agniveer Navy vacancies are notified each cycle. Written exam performance, physical fitness and medical examination together determine selection. There is no SSB or interview for sailor-level entries β it is a purely objective selection process.
Selection process: Online written exam β shortlisting by merit β Physical Fitness Test (PFT) at a naval selection centre β Medical examination. After selection, Agniveer Navy sailors receive basic naval training at INS Chilka in Odisha, followed by branch-specific training at technical schools.
At the end of four years, up to 25% of each batch may be enrolled into the Regular Navy as Petty Officers or equivalent. The exit package (Seva Nidhi) is approximately βΉ11.71 lakh tax-free. Navy Agniveers receive the same monthly pay structure as Army Agniveers (βΉ30,000 rising to βΉ40,000) with free accommodation, rations and clothing.
The Indian Navy provides skills in electronics, marine engineering, weapon systems and IT during the four-year tenure β making Agniveer Navy veterans competitive in the private sector and eligible for priority recruitment in CAPF, Coast Guard and state armed forces after exit.
How it works
Agniveer Navy selection process
Online written exam
Conducted at CDAC-designated centres. SSR: 100 questions (English 25, Science 25, Maths 25, GK 25) in 60 minutes. MR: 50 questions (GK/Science 25, Maths 25) in 30 minutes. Negative marking applies as per the current notification. A merit list is drawn from written marks for PFT call-up.
Physical Fitness Test (PFT)
Conducted at a naval selection centre. Includes a 1.6 km run, push-ups, sit-ups and squats within specified time limits. Candidates failing the PFT are disqualified. Exact benchmarks are published in each notification.
Medical examination
Navy medical standard applied. Height minimum 157 cm for both MR and SSR. Colour vision standards apply β no colour-blindness for technical or weapons trades. Candidates are checked for physical defects, dental health and general fitness.
Training at INS Chilka
Selected Agniveers report to INS Chilka, Odisha for approximately 16 weeks of basic military training covering naval etiquette, physical training, parade, swimming, firefighting and basic seamanship. After basic training, they are allocated to their technical or support branch for specialisation training.

Strategy
How to prepare for Agniveer Navy
01Score 80%+ in Science and Maths for SSR shortlisting
The SSR written exam is 12th NCERT level. Science and Maths together have 50 questions β scoring 40+ in these two sections nearly guarantees shortlisting. Use NCERT Physics and Chemistry textbooks (Classes 11 and 12) as your primary source.
02Add Navy-specific GK to your notes
The GK paper often includes Indian Navy-specific questions: INS ships (Vikrant, Vikramaditya, Kolkata), naval exercises (MALABAR, TASMAN SABER), naval bases and maritime borders. Add a dedicated "Indian Navy" section to your GK notes.
03Swimming preparedness helps in training
INS Chilka training requires swimming. Even if you cannot swim now, learning basic swimming before joining will reduce stress during training. Many Agniveer Navy trainees struggle with water confidence tests β starting early gives a real edge.
04PFT is the hidden eliminator
Many candidates who clear the written exam fail the PFT. The 1.6 km run combined with push-ups and sit-ups must be practised daily starting 2-3 months before the selection date. Do not underestimate the PFT.
05MR aspirants: focus on basic Maths and GS
The MR exam is simpler (10th level) but competition is intense due to the lower eligibility bar. Brush up on percentages, ratios, basic geometry and science facts. Read one national newspaper headline page daily for current affairs.
