MBA Entrance Exams: CAT, XAT, MAT, SNAP — Pattern & Preparation

MBA entrance exams are your route into India's business schools — the IIMs through CAT, XLRI and other top institutes through XAT, the Symbiosis institutes through SNAP, and hundreds of colleges through MAT.

Unlike government exams, MBA entrances are percentile-based: you compete with everyone who took the test that year. The exam is only the first step — B-schools then shortlist for written ability tests, group discussions and personal interviews, and also weigh your academics and work experience.

How it works

How MBA/CAT selection works, step by step

Entrance exam

Take one or more entrance exams — most are held between November and January.

Percentile & shortlist

Each B-school sets its own cut-offs and shortlisting criteria, often combining percentile, academics, work experience and diversity factors.

WAT / GD / PI

Shortlisted candidates face a written ability test, group discussion or case discussion, and a personal interview.

Final offer

Final admission combines the entrance score with WAT, GD and PI performance and your profile.

Exam pattern

Exam pattern: sections, questions, marks & time

Common Admission Test, conducted by the IIMs in rotation — accepted by all IIMs and many other top B-schools.

Exam structure (recent years)

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension 35% Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning 32% Quantitative Ability 32%
SectionQuestionsMarks Time
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension 24 72 40 min
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning 22 66 40 min
Quantitative Ability 22 66 40 min
Total 68 204 2 hr

+3 for a correct answer. −1 for a wrong MCQ; no negative marking for TITA (type-in-the-answer) questions. Sections are timed separately.

Xavier Aptitude Test by XLRI — accepted by XLRI and over 150 other B-schools.

Sections: Decision Making (unique to XAT), Verbal & Logical Ability, and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation, plus a General Knowledge section used by some institutes. Wrong answers carry a negative mark, and there is also a small penalty for leaving too many questions unanswered.

Management Aptitude Test by AIMA — conducted several times a year and accepted by hundreds of B-schools.

Five sections: Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, and Indian & Global Environment. The last section is not counted in the percentile.

Symbiosis National Aptitude Test — for MBA programmes at Symbiosis International University institutes.

A short, fast test of General English, Analytical & Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative ability, Data Interpretation & Data Sufficiency. Candidates can take the test more than once, and the best score is considered.

How to prepare for MBA/CAT exams

01Read daily for VARC

Reading comprehension carries most of the verbal marks. Read long-form articles on varied topics every day to build speed and understanding.

02DILR is about set selection

The skill is spotting which 2–3 sets you can crack in 40 minutes. Practise choosing, not just solving.

03Arithmetic first in Quant

Arithmetic and algebra make up a large part of CAT Quant. Master them before moving to geometry and modern maths.

04Mocks are the core of MBA prep

Take 20–30 full mocks in the last three months and analyse each one. Percentile improvement comes from analysis.

05Build your profile too

Academics and work experience matter in shortlisting. Plan your GD/PI preparation while the exam is still months away.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about MBA/CAT exams

What is a good CAT percentile for IIMs?

Older IIMs typically shortlist above the 95–99 percentile range depending on category and profile; newer IIMs and other top schools often shortlist from around 85–95. Profile factors also matter.

Is there negative marking in CAT?

Yes, −1 for a wrong MCQ answer. TITA (type-in-the-answer) questions have no negative marking.

Can final-year students apply for CAT?

Yes. Final-year graduation students can apply, provided they complete the degree before the programme starts.

Should I take more than one MBA entrance exam?

Most aspirants take two to four (for example CAT, XAT, SNAP and NMAT) to widen their options — the preparation overlaps heavily.

Exam patterns, marks and eligibility are based on the latest notifications available and can change from one cycle to the next. Always confirm the details in the official notification on iimcat.ac.in before you apply.
