What is CAT?
CAT (Common Admission Test) is conducted every November by one of the IIMs on a rotation basis (IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode and others). It is India's most prestigious MBA entrance examination β the gateway to all 21 IIMs and accepted by over 1,200 B-schools including FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR Mumbai, IIT management schools (SJMSOM, DMS, VGSOM, DoMS) and top private institutes.
Approximately 3-4 lakh candidates appear for CAT each year for roughly 4,000-5,000 seats at IIMs alone, plus tens of thousands more seats at non-IIM institutes. The exam is computer-based, conducted in three slots across 2-3 days. Scores are percentile-based and normalised across slots.
CAT has three sections, each of 40 minutes: Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). Each section has approximately 22 questions: some MCQ (+3/-1 marking) and some TITA (Type In The Answer β no negative marking). Total approximately 66 questions, 198 marks.
After CAT results (December-January), each IIM sets its own shortlisting criteria combining CAT score, Class 10 and 12 marks, graduation percentage, work experience, gender diversity and academic diversity. Shortlisted candidates attend Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). Final admission = composite score of CAT + WAT/GD + PI + profile.
IIM MBA graduates are among India's highest-paid professionals. IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore average campus placements see packages of βΉ25-35 lakh per annum; IIM Calcutta, Lucknow, Indore offer βΉ22-30 lakh. Top IIM graduates often receive international offers of $100,000+. The ROI of an IIM MBA is very strong for most candidates.
How it works
CAT selection process
CAT exam (November)
Three sections, 40 minutes each, in a single continuous 2-hour session. Section order: VARC β DILR β QA. You cannot switch sections. Virtual calculator available. No physical calculator. Conducted across 400+ centres in 150+ cities. Scores released in December-January.
Shortlisting by IIMs
Each IIM independently sets shortlisting criteria based on: CAT percentile (often 99%+ for IIM-A/B/C), Class 10 board marks (typically 60%+), Class 12 board marks, graduation percentage, work experience and diversity factors. IIM shortlists are released in December-January. Different IIMs have very different shortlisting criteria β research each IIM's criteria separately.
WAT / GD / PI
Written Ability Test: a 30-minute essay on a social/business topic (IIM-A uses WAT; others may use GD). Group Discussion: 10-15 minute discussion among 8-12 candidates on a given topic. Personal Interview: 20-40 minute interview testing your profile, goals, current affairs awareness, subject knowledge and decision-making. Held February-April at IIM campuses.
Final admission & joining
Each IIM announces a final merit list combining CAT percentile + academic performance + WAT/GD/PI. Candidates accept or decline offers through an IIM-set deadline. Joining at the IIM for a 2-year residential MBA programme (PGDM or MBA) in June-July.

Strategy
How to prepare for CAT
01Reading Comprehension is non-negotiable β read daily for 12 months
CAT VARC is the single highest-weight section for most top scorers. RC passages are long (700-1,000 words), dense and argument-heavy. The only sustainable way to improve CAT RC is daily reading of quality non-fiction β The Economist, Harvard Business Review, Scientific American, The Atlantic. Start 12 months before CAT. Reading speed and comprehension both improve only through consistent, daily practice.
02DILR is the most unpredictable section β develop set-solving instinct
DILR difficulty varies wildly each year. Some years are calculative (DI-heavy); others are purely logic-based. The best DILR strategy is to spend 2-3 minutes scanning all sets, identify the 3-4 you can solve fastest, and solve those first. Do not spend 25 minutes on an impossible set. Practice 1 DILR set daily from previous CAT papers.
03QA: master Arithmetic β it is 40% of all QA questions
Arithmetic (percentages, profit-loss, time-work, time-speed-distance, ratio) accounts for approximately 40% of CAT QA questions each year. Geometry and Number Theory together account for another 35%. Algebra and P&C are important but lower in question count. Build a strong Arithmetic base first before moving to Geometry and Algebra.
04Take 15+ full-length mocks in the last 3 months
Sectional improvement plateaus without full-length mock practice. Mocks teach time management β 40 minutes per section is very strict. Aim for 15+ full-length mocks in the 3 months before CAT. Analyse every mock: which questions should you have attempted, which should you have left, and why? Analysis is more valuable than the mock itself.
05Profile matters at IIMs β build it before applying
Many IIMs give explicit scores to: Class 10 marks (10-15 points), Class 12 marks (10-15 points), graduation marks (10-15 points), work experience (0-10 points) and diversity (gender, background). A 99 percentile candidate with poor 10th/12th marks can be beaten by a 97 percentile candidate with excellent academics. Know each IIM's shortlisting criteria and assess your own composite profile honestly.
FAQs
CAT: frequently asked questions
How many times can I take CAT?
There is no limit on the number of CAT attempts. There is also no upper age limit for CAT. You can keep appearing until you achieve your target percentile or gain admission. Many successful IIM admits appeared 2-3 times.
Can I switch sections during CAT?
No. Each section (VARC, DILR, QA) is timed separately at 40 minutes each and you cannot switch between sections once a section ends. You must complete each section within its allocated time.
Is work experience necessary for CAT?
No. Fresh graduates can apply and many IIMs welcome them. However, work experience gives points in the composite scoring of many IIMs and provides content for PI discussions. IIM Calcutta, Lucknow and Indore particularly weight work experience. IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore heavily weight academic excellence for freshers.
What is a good CAT percentile for IIM?
For IIM A/B/C (top three): you typically need 99%+ percentile in overall and 95%+ in each section. For newer IIMs (IIM Shillong, Rohtak, Kashipur, etc.): 90-95% overall is often sufficient for the shortlisting stage. For non-IIM institutes like FMS and MDI: 97-99% overall is competitive. Profile and WAT-PI performance also matter significantly.
How is CAT percentile calculated?
CAT does not give you a percentage score β it gives you a percentile (e.g., 98.7 percentile means you scored better than 98.7% of all test takers). Scores are normalised across different slots to account for difficulty variations. The percentile is calculated section-wise and overall.
What is WAT in IIM admission?
Written Ability Test β a 30-minute written exercise at the IIM campus. Candidates write an essay on a social, economic or current affairs topic. IIM Ahmedabad uses WAT extensively. WAT tests clarity of thought, structure of argumentation, English writing ability and analytical depth.
Does CAT score expire?
Yes. A CAT score is valid only for the immediate admission cycle β applications that open after the exam result. If you scored well in CAT 2024, you can only use it for 2025 batch admissions. You must re-appear next year for 2026 batch.
What is the difference between IIM PGDM and MBA?
IIM programmes are called PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) rather than MBA because IIMs are autonomous institutes, not universities. PGDM from IIM is globally recognised and treated as equivalent to an MBA. Some newer IIMs have received university status and now offer MBA degrees.
Can engineering graduates apply for CAT?
Yes. Any graduate with 50% marks (45% for SC/ST/PwD) from a recognised university can apply. Engineering graduates make up approximately 70-75% of CAT test takers each year. Non-engineering backgrounds (Commerce, Arts, Science) are welcomed and some IIMs give diversity bonus to non-engineering candidates.
How difficult is CAT compared to other MBA entrance exams?
CAT is generally considered the hardest MBA entrance exam in India, primarily due to DILR (highly variable and logic-intensive) and VARC (passage quality and difficulty). XAT has a unique Decision Making section and longer duration. GMAT (for international programs) has a different format. CAT's 40-minute section constraint makes time management a critical skill beyond subject knowledge.
