MAT guide
What is MAT?
MAT (Management Aptitude Test) is conducted by the All India Management Association (AIMA) β a government-recognised test accepted by over 600 B-schools across India as a valid MBA entrance score. MAT is one of the most flexible MBA entrance exams: it is held multiple times a year (February, May, September, December) and is available in Paper-Based Test (PBT), Computer-Based Test (IBT) and Internet-Based Remote Proctored Test (IRPT) modes.
MAT is a 150-minute (2.5 hours) exam with 200 questions across five sections: Language Comprehension (40q), Mathematical Skills (40q), Data Analysis & Sufficiency (40q), Intelligence & Critical Reasoning (40q) and Indian & Global Environment (40q). The Indian & Global Environment section score is not included in the composite score used by institutes β only the first four sections count.
MAT scores are valid for one year from the exam date. Multiple attempts are allowed, and many candidates take MAT 2-3 times per year to improve scores. There is no age limit or attempt restriction. MAT is particularly popular as a backup option for candidates targeting CAT/XAT and as a primary exam for candidates seeking admission to Tier 2 and Tier 3 B-schools across India.
MAT-accepting institutes span all of India's major cities: Institute of Management Technology (IMT Gurgaon β also accepts XAT), Great Lakes Institute of Management, BIMTECH, Amity Business School, NDIM, IBS Business School and hundreds of others. Each institute sets its own MAT score cut-off for admission consideration.
MAT exam fees are moderate (βΉ1,500-βΉ2,500 per attempt depending on mode). Multiple registration windows allow candidates to plan strategically. A score of 600+ out of 800 (scaled score) is generally competitive for top MAT-accepting institutes; 650+ opens doors to premier MAT institutes like Great Lakes and BIMTECH.
How it works
MAT selection process
MAT exam
200 questions in 150 minutes. Sections: Language Comprehension (40q/30 min), Mathematical Skills (40q/40 min), Data Analysis & Sufficiency (40q/35 min), Intelligence & Critical Reasoning (40q/30 min), Indian & Global Environment/GK (40q/15 min). Marking: +1 per correct; β0.25 per wrong. GK section not counted in composite score.
Score card
AIMA releases score cards within 2-3 weeks of the exam. Score card shows raw section-wise scores and a composite scaled score (out of 800). Valid for 1 year. Download from mat.aima.in.
Institute applications
Apply to your target MAT-accepting institutes directly using your MAT score card. Each institute has its own application process, GD/PI dates and fees. Some institutes accept applications before the MAT score is available (provisional).
GD / PI at institutes
Most MAT-accepting institutes conduct Group Discussion + Personal Interview for shortlisted candidates. Selection = MAT score + GD/PI + academic profile.

How to prepare for MAT
01MAT is a volume test β speed and accuracy together matter
MAT has 200 questions in 150 minutes β 45 seconds per question. Unlike CAT (which is difficulty-focused), MAT rewards consistent speed across all sections. Practise solving each section type within the allocated time. Attempting 170-180 questions with 80-85% accuracy is a strong MAT performance.
02Avoid the GK section time trap
The GK section (Indian & Global Environment, 40 questions) is not counted in the composite score. Many candidates waste 25-30 minutes on GK and rush through scored sections. Allocate maximum 15 minutes to GK at the end β or skip it entirely if time is tight. Focus your time on the four scored sections.
03Multiple attempts in a year: improve strategically
MAT is held 4 times a year and you can attempt multiple times. Your best score from the past year is what institutes typically consider. If you score 550 in February, take MAT again in May or September with 2 months of targeted preparation. Identify your weakest section from the first attempt and focus on it.
04Mathematical Skills is straightforward β maximise it
MAT Maths (40 questions) tests standard quantitative topics at a difficulty level similar to CAT Prelims or IBPS PO Mains β not CAT-level difficulty. Percentages, time-work, ratios and geometry basics are the core. A strong CAT/IBPS Maths preparation directly translates to MAT Maths. Targeting 36-38/40 here is achievable with focused preparation.
05Research your target institutes before applying
MAT score alone does not secure admission β each institute has its own cut-off, GD/PI process and selection criteria. Some MAT-accepting institutes (Great Lakes, BIMTECH, NDIM, IBS) are significantly better than others. Research placement records, fees and programme quality before deciding which institutes to apply to with your MAT score.
FAQs
MAT: frequently asked questions
How many times is MAT held in a year?
AIMA conducts MAT approximately 4 times per year: February, May, September and December. Exact dates vary β check mat.aima.in. Candidates can appear in multiple sessions per year.
Is MAT easier than CAT?
Yes, generally. MAT questions are at a lower difficulty level than CAT across all sections. CAT is specifically designed to test at IIM admission level; MAT is designed for a broader range of B-schools. However, MAT has more questions (200 vs. CAT's ~66) and a tighter time frame per question, so speed is critical.
How long is the MAT score valid?
MAT score is valid for 1 year from the date of the exam. Use your score for applications and institute admissions within this 1-year window.
Which are the best institutes accepting MAT?
Top-tier MAT-accepting institutes: Great Lakes Institute of Management (Chennai/Gurgaon), BIMTECH (Greater Noida), NDIM (New Delhi), IBS Business School (multiple locations), Amity Business School, KIIT School of Management. These typically require a MAT score of 600-650+ out of 800.
Is CAT preparation useful for MAT?
Yes, significantly. If you are preparing for CAT, MAT requires little additional preparation β the topics are the same, just at a lower difficulty level. You can take MAT as a backup exam alongside CAT without significant extra study time.
What is the MAT composite score out of?
MAT has 160 questions counted (200 minus 40 GK). The composite scaled score is reported out of 800. A score of 600+ is competitive for most institutes; 700+ is required for top MAT-accepting B-schools.
Can I take MAT multiple times in the same year?
Yes. There is no restriction on the number of MAT attempts per year. If the December session score is not satisfactory, you can retake in February of the next year.
Is there negative marking in MAT?
Yes. -0.25 marks per wrong answer (+1 for correct). The penalty is light β attempt questions where you can eliminate at least 1-2 options. Do not leave easy questions blank due to fear of negative marking.
What is the difference between PBT, IBT and IRPT MAT?
PBT (Paper-Based Test) is an offline OMR exam. IBT (Internet-Based Test) is an online CBT at test centres. IRPT (Internet-Based Remote Proctored Test) is an online exam taken at home with webcam proctoring. All three modes test the same content and generate the same score. IBT and IRPT are more convenient. Check mat.aima.in for the schedule of each mode.
How do I register for MAT?
Register at mat.aima.in. Create an account, fill in your profile, choose the session and mode (PBT/IBT/IRPT), pay the registration fee (βΉ1,500-βΉ2,500 depending on mode) and download your admit card. Registration windows open 6-8 weeks before the exam date.
