What is BPSC 70th?
The BPSC Combined Competitive Examination (CCE), conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission, recruits officers for Bihar state services β including Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (Deputy SP), Block Development Officer (BDO), District Commandant and other Group A and Group B posts across Bihar government departments.
The 70th CCE represents one of the recent recruitment cycles. Bihar government has been conducting BPSC CCE roughly every 1-2 years, and each cycle attracts massive participation β 4-8 lakh candidates for 500-800 vacancies across all categories. BPSC is considered among the most competitive state PSC exams in India given the aspirant density in Bihar.
BPSC CCE has three stages: Prelims (single objective paper, qualifying), Mains (descriptive, merit) and Interview (personality test). The Prelims is a single 150-question, 150-mark paper covering General Studies, tested over 2 hours. There is no CSAT/aptitude paper in BPSC β unlike UPSC and most other state PSCs, making the Prelims entirely GS-focused.
Mains consists of General Hindi (qualifying, 100 marks), Essay (100 marks), General Studies I (300 marks), General Studies II (300 marks) and an Optional Subject (300 marks) β total merit marks of 1,000, plus Interview (120 marks) = 1,120 marks for final ranking. Bihar-specific history, geography, economy and culture feature prominently in all papers.
A newly appointed SDO/BDO in Bihar draws Pay Level 10 (βΉ56,100 basic) with Bihar state DA. With allowances, in-hand salary is approximately βΉ60,000-βΉ75,000 per month. Given Bihar's cost of living (lower than metros), this translates to a comfortable standard. Government accommodation and perquisites are provided at district-level postings.
How it works
BPSC 70th selection process
Prelims (objective, qualifying)
Single General Studies paper: 150 questions, 150 marks, 2 hours. Tests History (ancient, medieval, modern, Bihar), Geography (India & Bihar), Indian Polity, Economy (India & Bihar), Science, Technology and Current Affairs. Negative marking: 0.25 per wrong answer. Cut-off is used purely to shortlist Mains candidates β Prelims marks do not count in final merit.
Mains (descriptive)
General Hindi: 100 marks, qualifying (must pass). Essay: 100 marks. General Studies I: 300 marks (History, Geography, Indian Polity, Bihar-specific). General Studies II: 300 marks (Science, Technology, Economy, Environment, Current Affairs). Optional Subject: 300 marks (one subject from ~34 options). Total merit marks: 1,000.
Interview / Personality Test
Conducted at BPSC, Patna. Carries 120 marks. Tests current affairs awareness, Bihar administration knowledge, personality and communication. Interview performance can significantly improve final rank due to its relatively high marks.
Final merit & service allocation
Final merit = Mains 1,000 + Interview 120 = 1,120 marks. Rank determines service. SDO and Deputy SP are top preferences; BDO and other Group B posts are allocated at lower ranks.

Strategy
How to prepare for BPSC 70th
01Bihar GK is the highest-scoring Prelims topic
BPSC Prelims consistently includes 25-35 questions specifically on Bihar β Bihar history (Magadha empire, Chandragupta Maurya, Buddha and Mahavira from Bihar), Bihar geography (rivers, districts, crops), Bihar current affairs and Bihar government schemes. A focused Bihar GK book (e.g., Kalinjar BPSC Bihar GK) can help you score 25+ marks purely from Bihar-specific questions.
02No CSAT in BPSC β pure GS preparation
Unlike UPSC and most state PSCs, BPSC Prelims has no CSAT (aptitude/reasoning paper). The entire 150-question Prelims is General Studies. This means your GS preparation directly determines your Prelims performance β no time or effort needed for reasoning or maths mock tests.
03Choose optional subject based on graduation background
BPSC Mains optional (300 marks) is the single biggest merit differentiator. Choose from History, Geography, Public Administration, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Hindi Literature, Mathematics or other available subjects. Pick the one aligned with your graduation subject or genuine interest for maximum marks.
04General Hindi Mains paper is qualifying β prepare it seriously
General Hindi (100 marks) is compulsory and qualifying in BPSC Mains. Topics include Hindi grammar, comprehension, letter writing and essay. Many non-Hindi-background candidates fail this paper. Start Hindi grammar revision early and practice writing formal letters and essays in standard Hindi.
05Solve 8-10 previous BPSC Prelims papers
BPSC Prelims follows a highly predictable pattern. Previous papers (65th, 66th, 67th CCE etc.) show the exact topic distribution: approximately 30% History, 25% Bihar GK, 15% Geography, 15% Current Affairs, 15% Science. Solve them under timed conditions and track which topics you consistently miss.
FAQs
BPSC 70th: frequently asked questions
How many papers are there in BPSC Prelims?
A single General Studies objective paper of 150 questions and 150 marks in 2 hours. There is no CSAT or aptitude paper in BPSC β unlike UPSC or UPPSC.
Is General Hindi counted in BPSC Mains merit?
No. General Hindi (100 marks) is qualifying only. You must pass it to remain in contention, but its marks are not added to your merit total. Merit is based on Essay (100m) + GS I (300m) + GS II (300m) + Optional (300m) + Interview (120m).
Is Bihar GK important for BPSC?
Extremely important. Bihar GK is tested in Prelims (25-35 questions), Mains GS I, and even the interview. BPSC rewards candidates who have deep knowledge of Bihar history, geography, economy and current affairs. This is the biggest differentiator between close-ranking candidates.
What optional subjects are available in BPSC Mains?
Approximately 34 optional subjects are available including Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Anthropology, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce & Accountancy, Economics, English Literature, Geography, Hindi Literature, History, Law, Maithili Literature, Management, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics, Urdu Literature, Zoology and others.
How many attempts are allowed for BPSC?
General: up to 37 years of age (typically 6-10 attempts from graduation at 21-22). SC/ST of Bihar: up to 42 years. OBC of Bihar: up to 40 years. BPSC does not limit attempts by a fixed number β only by age.
What is the BPSC interview worth?
120 marks β which is more than most state PSC interviews. This means a 15-20 mark difference in interview can significantly change final rank. Interview preparation (Bihar administration, current affairs, DAF-based questions) is very important for BPSC.
What is the SDO salary in Bihar?
Pay Level 10 (βΉ56,100 basic) with Bihar state DA. In-hand salary approximately βΉ60,000-βΉ75,000 per month. Government accommodation, vehicle and staff support are provided at the posting.
Is the BPSC 70th CCE the latest cycle?
BPSC numbers its cycles sequentially. The 70th CCE was notified in 2024. Subsequent cycles will continue the numbering. Check bpsc.bih.nic.in for the current active cycle.
Can candidates outside Bihar apply for BPSC?
Yes, any Indian national with a graduation degree can apply. Reserved category benefits are only for Bihar domicile candidates. General category candidates from outside Bihar compete for the general quota seats.
What is the BPSC Prelims cut-off typically?
The Prelims cut-off varies each cycle β typically 80-100 out of 150 for the general category, depending on difficulty. BPSC publishes the official cut-off after declaring Mains shortlisting. Do not target the cut-off β aim for maximum score.
