What is UPPSC PCS?
UPPSC PCS (Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services Examination) is conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission to recruit officers for Uttar Pradesh state services β including Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Deputy Superintendent of Police (Deputy SP), Block Development Officer (BDO), Treasury Officer, District Commandant Home Guard and other Group A and Group B posts.
Uttar Pradesh is India's most populous state with the largest state government machinery β making UPPSC PCS one of the most-applied-to state PSC exams in India, with over 6-10 lakh applications each cycle for roughly 300-600 vacancies. Competition is fierce, with many UPSC aspirants also appearing for UPPSC as a parallel target.
The exam has three stages: Prelims (objective, qualifying), Mains (descriptive, merit) and Interview (personality test). Prelims has a General Studies paper (150 questions, 200 marks) and a qualifying CSAT paper (100 questions, 200 marks, passing at 33%). Mains is a descriptive exam with 6 merit papers plus General Hindi (compulsory qualifying paper).
The Mains pattern has been revised by UPPSC in recent years. Current scheme includes: General Hindi (150 marks, qualifying), Essay (150 marks), General Studies I (200 marks), General Studies II (200 marks), General Studies III (200 marks), General Studies IV (200 marks) β totalling 950 marks for merit, plus Interview (100 marks) = 1,050 marks total for final ranking.
A newly appointed Deputy Collector (SDM) in UP draws Pay Level 10 (βΉ56,100 basic) β the same as an IAS officer β with state government DA and HRA. In-hand salary is approximately βΉ65,000-βΉ80,000. PCS officers posted in district administration also receive a residence, vehicle and staff as perquisites.
How it works
UPPSC PCS selection process
Prelims (objective)
GS Paper I: 150 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours. Covers History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science, UP GK and Current Affairs. Negative marking: 0.33 per wrong answer. CSAT Paper II: 100 questions, 200 marks β qualifying at 33%. Only GS Paper I marks are used to shortlist for Mains.
Mains (descriptive)
General Hindi: 150 marks, qualifying (must pass). Essay: 150 marks. GS I: 200 marks (History, Culture, Geography). GS II: 200 marks (Polity, Governance, Social). GS III: 200 marks (Economy, Agriculture, Technology). GS IV: 200 marks (Ethics, Integrity, Aptitude). Total merit marks: 950. UP-specific content features heavily in all papers.
Interview / Personality Test
Conducted by the UPPSC board. Carries 100 marks. Tests knowledge of current events, UP-specific administration, personality, leadership qualities and communication. Relatively lower marks compared to the state of overall merit.
Final merit & service allocation
Final merit = Mains (950) + Interview (100) = 1,050 marks. Rank determines service and post allocation. SDM and Deputy SP are the top-choice posts; lower ranks get other Group B services.
Exam pattern
UPPSC PCS exam pattern
Most follow the UPSC model β an objective Prelims (General Studies, often with a qualifying CSAT paper), a descriptive Mains and an interview β but the number of papers, the optional subject rule, negative marking and the weight of state-specific GK (history, geography, economy and culture of that state) vary. Always read your state commission's latest notification.

How to prepare for UPPSC PCS
01UP-specific GK is the biggest differentiator at UPPSC
Both Prelims and Mains heavily test Uttar Pradesh β its history (Mughal period, freedom movement, UP statehood), geography (rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Ghaghra), culture (Kathak, Chikankari, Varanasi ghats), economy (sugarcane, wheat belt, Noida IT), and government schemes (UP Mukhyamantri Yuva Swarozgar Yojana, ODOP). Prepare a dedicated UP GK module from UPPSC previous papers.
02General Hindi is compulsory β prepare it from Day 1
General Hindi (150 marks) is a qualifying paper that many candidates neglect. Hindi grammar (Sandhi, Samas, Vakya Shuddhi), essay writing in Hindi, and letter writing are tested. A poorly prepared Hindi paper can lead to disqualification. Start revising Hindi grammar and practice writing essays in Hindi from the beginning of Mains preparation.
03Match your preparation with UPSC CSE
UPPSC Mains GS content is largely a subset of UPSC CSE Mains content. Candidates preparing for UPSC can cover UPPSC Mains with supplementary UP-specific study. If you are targeting both, prepare for UPSC standard and add UP GK on top.
04Previous papers reveal Prelims topic frequency
UPPSC Prelims GS Paper I has a consistent pattern: approximately 25-30% History, 20-25% Geography, 15-20% UP GK, 15% Science and 10-15% Current Affairs. Solving 7-10 previous UPPSC Prelims papers shows exactly which topics repeat and at what weight.
05Essay in Hindi requires structured practice
The Essay paper (150 marks) requires writing two essays in Hindi β one on a social/political topic and one on a general topic. Many candidates lose 20-30 marks due to poor structure and thin content. Practice writing full 1,000-word Hindi essays on UPPSC-typical topics (development, environment, governance, women empowerment, UP economy) weekly.

UPPSC PCS is specifically challenging due to the UP GK component and Hindi language papers which many candidates underestimate.
