What is RPSC RAS?
RPSC RAS/RTS (Rajasthan Administrative Service / Rajasthan Taxation Service) Examination is conducted by the Rajasthan Public Service Commission to recruit officers for the Rajasthan Administrative Service (RAS), Rajasthan Police Service (RPS), Rajasthan Accounts Service, Rajasthan Taxation Service and other Group A and Group B services of Rajasthan government.
Around 3-6 lakh candidates compete for 700-1,000 vacancies in a typical RAS cycle, making it one of the largest state PSC exams in India by absolute vacancy count. Rajasthan's administrative structure creates a strong demand for officers across the state's 33 districts and hundreds of tehsils.
The RAS examination follows a three-stage process: Prelims (objective, qualifying), Mains (descriptive, merit) and Interview. A unique feature of RPSC is that Rajasthan history, art, culture and geography carry a very high weight across all stages β sometimes accounting for 30-40% of Prelims and Mains GS questions.
Prelims consists of a combined General Knowledge & General Science paper (150 questions, 200 marks, 3 hours). Mains has four descriptive papers: GS I (200 marks), GS II (200 marks), GS III (200 marks) and GS IV (200 marks) = 800 marks for merit, plus Interview (100 marks) = 900 marks total. There are no optional papers in the current RAS scheme.
An RAS officer starting as a Tehsildar or similar entry-level post draws Pay Level 10 or lower depending on the specific service. Deputy Collector and RPS ranks draw Pay Level 10 (βΉ56,100 basic). With Rajasthan state DA and allowances, in-hand salary is approximately βΉ55,000-βΉ70,000 per month plus government accommodation at posting.
How it works
RPSC RAS selection process
Prelims (objective, qualifying)
Combined GK & General Science paper: 150 questions, 200 marks, 3 hours. Tests Rajasthan History, Art & Culture, Geography, Polity, Economy, General Science, Current Affairs (Rajasthan + National + International). Negative marking: 1/3 of marks per wrong answer. Qualifying only β marks not counted in final merit.
Mains (descriptive)
Four GS papers, each 200 marks (3 hours each). GS I: History of Rajasthan, India and World; Art & Culture of Rajasthan. GS II: Indian Constitution, Governance and Political Science; Rajasthan Administration. GS III: Economy of India and Rajasthan; Geography. GS IV: General Science, Technology, Environment and Current Affairs. Total merit: 800 marks.
Interview / Personality Test
Conducted at RPSC, Ajmer. Carries 100 marks. Tests personality, Rajasthan administration awareness, current affairs and communication. Rajasthan culture and state-specific administrative topics feature in interview questions.
Final merit & service allocation
Merit = Mains (800) + Interview (100) = 900 marks. Final rank determines service. RAS (Deputy Collector) and RPS (Deputy SP) are top choices; other Group A and B services fill at lower ranks.

How to prepare for RPSC RAS
01Rajasthan history and culture is the highest-weight topic
Rajasthan history (Rajput period, Maratha interactions, integration) and culture (folk arts, festivals, architecture) together account for 30-40% of both Prelims and Mains GS I. Buy a dedicated Rajasthan GK book (Lucent Rajasthan GK or RPSC-specific guides) and master every section. This is the area where local candidates have a natural advantage.
02Negative marking in Prelims is 1/3 β be accurate
RPSC Prelims negative marking is 1/3 of marks per wrong answer, which is higher than BPSC (0.25). Accuracy matters more than attempting all questions. Do not guess randomly β only mark when you can eliminate at least 2 options confidently.
03Mains has no optional subject β all GS papers are mandatory
Unlike BPSC, RPSC RAS Mains has no optional subject. All four GS papers (800 marks) are mandatory. This means you cannot compensate a weak area with a strong optional β every GS subject requires solid preparation.
04Rajasthan current affairs from the state budget to Chief Minister schemes
RPSC Mains and interview frequently test Rajasthan government's current initiatives: budget highlights, major welfare schemes (Chiranjeevi Yojana, Indira Gandhi Shahari Rozgar Guarantee Yojana), infrastructure projects and state-level administrative changes. Follow Rajasthan Patrika and the official Rajasthan government website for current affairs.
05Prepare for GS IV carefully β science and environment for Rajasthan
GS IV covers Science, Technology and Environment, including Rajasthan-specific environmental challenges (desertification, water scarcity, Aravalli ecology). NCERT Class 9-12 Science provides the base; supplement with Rajasthan environment reports and scheme details for state-specific questions.
FAQs
RPSC RAS: frequently asked questions
Is there negative marking in RAS Prelims?
Yes. 1/3 of the marks for a question are deducted for each wrong answer. With each correct answer worth approximately 1.33 marks (200/150), one wrong answer costs about 0.44 marks. Be selective β do not guess unless you can rule out at least 2 options.
How important is Rajasthan GK for RAS?
Extremely important β perhaps more than any other state PSC exam for its respective state. Rajasthan history, culture (folk arts, fairs, forts), geography (Thar Desert, Aravalli, rivers) and economy (minerals, tourism, agriculture) together constitute 30-40% of both Prelims and Mains questions. No competitive preparation for RAS is complete without mastering Rajasthan GK.
Is RAS Prelims counted in final merit?
No. Prelims is qualifying only β your score is used to shortlist Mains candidates but is not added to final merit. Merit is based entirely on Mains (800 marks) + Interview (100 marks).
What posts are recruited through RPSC RAS?
Rajasthan Administrative Service (Deputy Collector), Rajasthan Police Service (Deputy SP), Rajasthan Accounts Service Officer, Rajasthan Taxation Service Officer, Block Development Officer, Tehsildar (under Rajasthan Revenue Service) and other Group A and B state services.
Is there an optional subject in RAS Mains?
No. The current RAS Mains scheme has four mandatory GS papers (800 marks) with no optional paper. This differs from BPSC and some other state PSCs. All four papers must be prepared.
What is the age limit for RPSC RAS?
General: 21-40 years. SC/ST (Rajasthan domicile): 21-45 years. OBC (Rajasthan domicile): 21-43 years. Check the current notification for exact limits and any special relaxations.
Can candidates from outside Rajasthan apply for RAS?
Yes. Any Indian national with a graduation degree can apply. Reserved category benefits (SC/ST/OBC reservation) are only for Rajasthan domicile candidates. General category candidates from other states compete for the general quota.
What is the RAS interview worth?
100 marks out of 900 total. While significant, Mains (800 marks) is more decisive for final rank. Interview topics frequently include Rajasthan administration, state current affairs, DAF-based personal questions and general awareness.
How many vacancies does RPSC RAS release typically?
RPSC RAS typically releases 700-1,200 vacancies per major cycle, including combined state services. This is one of the highest vacancy counts among state PSC exams. Cycles occur approximately every 2-3 years.
What is the Deputy Collector salary in Rajasthan?
Pay Level 10 (βΉ56,100 basic) with Rajasthan state DA. With all allowances, in-hand salary is approximately βΉ55,000-βΉ70,000 per month. Government accommodation is provided at district postings.
