MPSC Rajyaseva guide
What is MPSC Rajyaseva?
MPSC Rajyaseva (Maharashtra Public Service Commission State Services Examination) is the premier state civil services exam for Maharashtra, recruiting officers for the Maharashtra Administrative Service (MAS), Maharashtra Police Service (MPS), Maharashtra Finance Service, Maharashtra Sales Tax Service, Block Development Officer and other Group A and Group B state services.
Around 4-6 lakh candidates appear for MPSC Rajyaseva for approximately 200-500 vacancies per cycle, making it extremely competitive. The exam follows a UPSC-style three-stage format: Prelims (objective, qualifying), Mains (descriptive, merit) and Interview (personality test).
MPSC has significantly revised its Mains examination pattern in recent years, moving from an optional-subject-based model to a UPSC-style General Studies descriptive model. The current Mains consists of a mandatory Marathi paper (qualifying), General Studies papers, Essay and Marathi/English language skills β heavily testing Maharashtra-specific history, geography, politics, economy and current affairs.
Knowledge of Marathi is essential for MPSC β the Mains includes mandatory Marathi language papers and the Prelims GS paper includes Maharashtra-specific questions. While the exam medium can be English or Marathi for most papers, many coaching experts recommend preparing the optional language/essay section in Marathi for full command over the language.
A newly appointed Deputy Collector in Maharashtra draws Pay Level 10 (βΉ56,100 basic) with Maharashtra state DA and allowances. With all allowances in Mumbai, the effective in-hand is approximately βΉ75,000-βΉ90,000. Maharashtra state government provides accommodation and perquisites for Group A officers in district postings.

How to prepare for MPSC Rajyaseva
01Maharashtra GK is the biggest differentiator in Prelims
MPSC Prelims GS Paper I includes 25-35% Maharashtra-specific questions β Maratha history, Western Ghats geography, Maharashtra government schemes, famous personalities (Shivaji Maharaj, Savitribai Phule, Ambedkar), and Maharashtra current affairs. Buy a dedicated Maharashtra GK book for MPSC and revise it weekly.
02Marathi language paper is qualifying β do not neglect it
The mandatory Marathi Mains paper (qualifying) tests Marathi grammar, comprehension, essay writing and translation. Many candidates from English-medium backgrounds underestimate this paper. Practise Marathi grammar from a standard reference and write 2 Marathi essays per week during Mains preparation.
03Follow the revised MPSC Mains pattern carefully
MPSC has changed its Mains scheme multiple times in recent years. Always check the current notification on mpsc.gov.in for the exact papers, marks and pattern before beginning Mains preparation. Do not follow outdated study plans from coaching centres that have not updated their material.
04Solve 7-10 previous MPSC Rajyaseva Prelims papers
MPSC Prelims follows a consistent topic distribution. Previous papers reveal that Maharashtra History (Maratha Empire, modern Maharashtra) and Maharashtra Economy (agriculture, industry) together constitute about 30-35% of GS Paper I. Solving previous papers is more valuable than any single book.
05Use UPSC preparation as the base + add Maharashtra layer
MPSC Mains GS content overlaps 70-75% with UPSC Mains. If you are preparing for both, use UPSC standard books as your base and add Maharashtra-specific modules on top. This dual preparation is common and efficient among Maharashtra aspirants.
