CTET guide

What is CTET?

CTET (Central Teacher Eligibility Test) is conducted by CBSE to certify that a candidate meets the minimum qualification standard to teach in central government schools β€” Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas and central government-aided schools. CTET is conducted online and typically held twice a year.

The exam has two separate papers: Paper I for candidates who want to teach Classes 1-5 (primary level), and Paper II for Classes 6-8 (upper primary level). Candidates who want to teach both levels must appear in both papers in the same exam cycle. Both papers are of 150 marks, 150 questions, with a 2.5-hour duration and no negative marking.

Paper I covers Child Development & Pedagogy (30q), Language I (30q), Language II (30q), Mathematics (30q) and Environmental Studies (30q). Paper II covers Child Development & Pedagogy (30q), Language I (30q), Language II (30q), and either Mathematics & Science (60q) or Social Studies/Social Science (60q) based on the candidate's chosen teaching subject.

A candidate scoring 60% or above (90/150) in CTET receives a CTET certificate from CBSE. The certificate was earlier valid for 7 years; after a 2021 government order, it is now valid for lifetime. Reserved category candidates (SC/ST/OBC/PH) need 55% (82-83/150) to pass in most states, but the CTET pass mark is 60% regardless β€” states set their own TET pass mark separately.

Passing CTET is only an eligibility certificate β€” it does not guarantee a job. You still need to clear a separate recruitment examination (KVS, NVS, DSSSB, or state-level teacher recruitment) to get a teaching post. However, CTET is accepted by a large number of state governments and schools as a recognised eligibility qualifier.

How it works

CTET selection process

1

Online application

Apply on ctet.nic.in. Choose Paper I, Paper II or both. Select Language I and Language II from the available options. Upload photo and signature as specified.

2

Admit card download

Admit card released on ctet.nic.in about 2-3 weeks before the exam. Download and verify details β€” name, date of birth, exam centre.

3

Exam (CBT)

150 questions in 2.5 hours per paper. All MCQ, no negative marking. Paper I: CDP + Lang I + Lang II + Maths + EVS. Paper II: CDP + Lang I + Lang II + subject (Maths-Science or Social Studies).

4

Result & certificate

CBSE publishes results on ctet.nic.in. Candidates scoring 60%+ receive a digital CTET Qualifying Certificate with a registration number. This certificate is accepted by KVS, NVS, DSSSB and most states.

βœ“

Use certificate for recruitment

Apply for KVS PRT/TGT, NVS TGT, DSSSB TGT/PRT, or state-level teacher recruitment exams using the CTET certificate. CTET itself does not allocate any job.

Strategy

How to prepare for CTET

01CDP is the highest-ROI section

Child Development & Pedagogy (CDP) is 30 questions in both papers and is entirely theoretical β€” no calculations. Most questions are application-based on theories by Piaget, Vygotsky and Kohlberg. Study NCERT psychology chapters and 3-4 CTET-specific CDP books. Targeting 27+/30 here is realistic with 20-25 hours of focused study.

02Language I and II: practice error detection and comprehension

Language sections (60 questions combined) test grammar, comprehension and pedagogy. The pedagogy part asks how to teach language in a classroom β€” study this from CTET language pedagogy notes. For grammar, revise error detection and fill-in-the-blanks patterns from previous papers.

03No negative marking β€” attempt all 150 questions

Unlike most government exams, CTET has zero negative marking. This means you must attempt every single question, even if you are guessing. Leaving questions blank is a mistake. Practice mock tests targeting completion of all 150 questions within 2.5 hours.

04Solve 10 previous CTET papers

CTET repeats question patterns heavily. Questions on CDP theories, EVS topics (plants, water, shelter) and Maths word problems recur across years. Solving 10 previous CTET papers (5 for Paper I, 5 for Paper II) gives you a strong prediction of what will appear.

05EVS topics for Paper I come straight from NCERT Class 3-5

Environmental Studies (Paper I) questions are almost entirely from NCERT EVS textbooks of Classes 3, 4 and 5. Read all three textbooks once carefully and mark questions likely to appear. This section rewards systematic NCERT reading more than any other prep material.

FAQs

CTET: frequently asked questions

How many times is CTET held in a year?

CBSE typically conducts CTET twice a year, usually in July-August and November-December. The exact schedule changes β€” check ctet.nic.in for the current cycle.

Can B.Ed students take CTET?

Yes. Candidates in the final year of B.Ed or D.El.Ed are eligible to appear in CTET. They must complete the degree before applying for any actual teaching post.

Can I improve my CTET score?

Yes. There is no restriction on the number of CTET attempts. You can retake CTET in any future cycle to improve your score. Only the qualifying certificate matters β€” a higher score than the minimum 60% does not give any additional preference in most recruitments.

Is CTET mandatory for KVS or NVS jobs?

Yes. CTET Paper I pass is required for KVS/NVS PRT posts. CTET Paper II pass is required for KVS/NVS TGT posts. Some private schools also accept CTET as a teaching qualification requirement.

What is the CTET pass mark for SC/ST candidates?

The CTET pass mark is 60% (90/150) for all categories without distinction. However, individual state governments and recruiting bodies may apply a lower cut-off for reserved categories in their own teacher recruitment exams. CTET itself has a uniform 60% pass mark.

How long is the CTET certificate valid?

Since February 2021, the CTET certificate is valid for a lifetime. Previously it was valid for 7 years. Candidates who had 7-year certificates at the time of the government order got lifetime validity automatically.

Does a CTET pass guarantee a job?

No. CTET is only an eligibility certificate. You must additionally clear a separate teaching recruitment examination β€” KVS, NVS, DSSSB, or a state teacher recruitment board β€” to actually get a teaching job. CTET is a prerequisite, not a selection.

Can I appear in both Paper I and Paper II in the same cycle?

Yes. You can register for both Paper I and Paper II in the same CTET application. They are usually held on the same day at different shifts. You will receive separate certificates for each paper you clear.

Which language should I choose as Language I and II in CTET?

Language I should be the medium of instruction you plan to teach in. Language II is a second language of the school. Most candidates choose Hindi as Language I and English as Language II, or vice versa. Regional languages are also available β€” choose what you are most comfortable with for maximum marks.

What is the difference between CTET and state TET?

CTET is a central-level exam conducted by CBSE, valid for central government school recruitment (KVS, NVS, DSSSB). State TETs (UPTET, MPTET, REET, etc.) are conducted by respective state governments for state government school recruitment. Some states accept CTET for state school jobs but most require their own state TET.
