What is UPTET?
UPTET (Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test) is the state-level teacher eligibility test for Uttar Pradesh, conducted by the UP Pariksha Niyamak Pradhikari (UPPNP). It certifies candidates as eligible to teach in UP government primary and upper primary schools β specifically for Block Resource Centres and schools under the UP Basic Education Board.
Its structure mirrors CTET β Paper I for Classes 1-5 (primary) and Paper II for Classes 6-8 (upper primary). Both papers have 150 questions, 150 marks, 2.5 hours duration and no negative marking. Passing UPTET is mandatory to apply for teacher posts in UP Basic Education Board (UP BEd/DELED teacher recruitment).
UPTET is typically held once a year, although the frequency has been irregular in recent cycles due to exam cancellations (the 2021 paper was cancelled after a paper leak). Millions of candidates appear each cycle as UP is India's most populous state with one of the largest teaching workforces.
The pass mark for UPTET is 60% (90/150) for the general category and 55% (82/150) for SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates. This is different from CTET which has a uniform 60% cut-off. Passing UPTET qualifies you to apply for UP government school teacher recruitment β but does not by itself give you a job.
UPTET is only valid for UP state government school recruitment. If you want to teach in central schools (KVS, NVS), you need CTET separately. Many UP teacher recruitment drives accept both CTET and UPTET as valid eligibility certificates.
How it works
UPTET selection process
Online application
Apply on updeled.gov.in. Choose Paper I, Paper II or both. Upload documents as required. Pay the exam fee online.
Exam (offline OMR)
UPTET is typically held as an offline exam on OMR sheets. Paper I and Paper II may be held on the same day in different shifts. No negative marking β fill all answers.
Result & certificate
UPPNP publishes results on updeled.gov.in. Qualifying candidates receive a UPTET certificate. The certificate is valid for applying to UP teacher recruitment drives.
Teacher recruitment
Use the UPTET certificate to apply for UP Primary Teacher (68500 shikshak bharti) or UP Aided/Unaided school teacher recruitment. Selection in these recruitments is based on merit, academic marks and the recruitment exam.
Syllabus
UPTET syllabus: subjects & topics
Child Development & Pedagogy (both papers)

Mathematics (Paper I & II)
Environmental Studies / Social Studies (Paper I / II)
Strategy
How to prepare for UPTET
01Hindi grammar is the biggest section β prepare it deeply
UPTET Paper I and Paper II both have 30 Hindi language questions. Hindi grammar topics (Sandhi, Samas, Ras, Chhand, Alankar, idioms) are heavily tested. Use a dedicated UPTET Hindi grammar book and practice 200-300 questions from previous papers. This section is very scoring if you prepare systematically.
02CDP theories are high repeat-value questions
Child Development & Pedagogy (30 questions) has very predictable question patterns in UPTET. Piaget's stages, Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development, NCF 2005 and RTE Act 2009 questions repeat across years. Prepare a crisp 5-page CDP summary and revise it every 3 days.
03Use NCERT textbooks for EVS and Social Studies
UPTET EVS (Paper I) and Social Studies (Paper II) questions come almost directly from NCERT textbooks of Classes 3-8. Buy or download NCERT Class 3, 4, 5 (EVS) and Class 6, 7, 8 (History, Geography, Social Science) and read them thoroughly.
04Attempt all 150 questions β no negative marking
UPTET has no negative marking. Never leave any question unanswered. If unsure, mark your best guess. Skipping questions is a guaranteed loss of marks.
05Solve 5-7 previous UPTET papers
Many questions in UPTET repeat from earlier papers β especially in Hindi grammar, Maths operations and CDP. Solving previous papers reveals the exact difficulty level and topic frequency. Focus 40% of your study time on previous papers.
FAQs
UPTET: frequently asked questions
What is the UPTET pass mark?
60% (90/150) for the General category. 55% (82/150) for SC/ST/OBC/PH candidates β this is lower than CTET's uniform 60% cut-off.
Is UPTET valid outside Uttar Pradesh?
UPTET is mainly accepted for UP state school recruitment. For central government schools (KVS, NVS, DSSSB), you need CTET separately. Some private schools may accept UPTET but it is not a substitute for CTET at the national level.
Is the UPTET syllabus the same as CTET?
Largely yes β both test CDP, two languages, Maths and EVS/subject. The key difference is that UPTET places more emphasis on Hindi grammar and UP-specific pedagogy content. The pass mark for reserved categories is also lower in UPTET (55%) compared to CTET (60% for all).
How many times is UPTET held in a year?
Usually once a year, but the schedule has been irregular. Always check updeled.gov.in for the current notification. Candidates should apply as soon as the notification is out since the application window is typically short.
Can I appear in UPTET and CTET in the same year?
Yes. There is no restriction. Many teachers hold both UPTET and CTET certificates to maximise job opportunities across central and state schools.
What is the eligibility for UPTET Paper I?
Senior Secondary (12th) with at least 50% marks AND passed or appearing in final year of 2-year D.El.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) / BTC / or equivalent.
What is the eligibility for UPTET Paper II?
Graduation with at least 50% marks AND passed or appearing in B.Ed. B.El.Ed, D.El.Ed with at least 50% also qualifies for Paper II.
What happens after clearing UPTET?
You become eligible to apply for UP government school teacher recruitment drives (such as the UP Primary Teacher bharti) where selection is based on academic merit, Bharti exam or merit lists. Passing UPTET does not automatically give you a job.
Is UPTET held offline or online?
UPTET has been held as an offline OMR-based exam in recent cycles, unlike CTET which is computer-based. Check the current notification for the mode of the upcoming exam.
What is the UPTET certificate validity?
The UP government extended UPTET certificate validity to lifetime (similar to CTET). Previously it was 5-7 years. Candidates with older certificates got automatic lifetime validity after the government order.
