What is KVS PRT/TGT/PGT?
KVS (Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan) recruits teachers for over 1,250 Kendriya Vidyalayas across India, abroad and in defence establishments β making KVS teacher posts some of the most coveted teaching jobs in the country. KVS recruits PRT (Primary Teacher), TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher) and PGT (Post Graduate Teacher) through a competitive written examination.
The selection is highly competitive β KVS typically receives 5-12 lakh applications for 3,000-6,000 posts across subjects in a large recruitment cycle. Being a central government employee, a KVS teacher can be posted anywhere in India including overseas KVs in Moscow, Kathmandu, Vienna and Tehran. An all-India transfer liability is part of the service.
The KVS written exam covers General English (10q), General Hindi (10q), General Knowledge & Current Affairs (40q), Reasoning & Numerical Ability (40q), Computer Literacy (10q), Teaching Methodology & Pedagogy (40q), and for TGT/PGT β a Subject-specific section (80q). PRT has an additional Specific Subject Pedagogy section instead of a subject paper.
For PGT posts, selection involves a written exam plus an interview. PRT and TGT posts are selected purely on the basis of the written exam. KVS has recently adopted a centralised online examination model with a negative marking of 0.25 per wrong answer.
KVS teacher salaries are among the best in the government teaching sector. PRT: Pay Level 8 (βΉ47,600-βΉ1,51,100 basic). TGT: Pay Level 7 (βΉ44,900-βΉ1,42,400 basic). PGT: Pay Level 8 (βΉ47,600-βΉ1,51,100 basic). With DA + HRA + transport allowance, a new KVS TGT earns approximately βΉ65,000-βΉ80,000 in hand per month, along with CGHS medical, leave encashment, LTC and pension.

KVS PRT/TGT/PGT selection process

Written exam (CBT)
General English (10q), General Hindi (10q), GK & Current Affairs (40q), Reasoning & Numerical Ability (40q), Computer Literacy (10q), Teaching Methodology & Pedagogy (40q). For TGT/PGT: additional Subject Knowledge section (80q). Total approximately 180 questions, 180 marks, 3 hours. Negative marking: 0.25 per wrong answer.

Interview (PGT only)
Post-written-exam shortlisting leads to an interview for PGT posts. The interview assesses subject knowledge, teaching aptitude and communication skills. It carries weightage in final merit for PGT.

Document verification
Shortlisted candidates submit degree certificates, B.Ed/D.El.Ed certificates, CTET certificate, identity proof and category certificate. KVS is strict about document accuracy.

Final merit & joining
PRT and TGT: final merit purely from written exam. PGT: merit from written + interview. Selected candidates are posted to KVs across India based on subject requirement and vacancy. Postings are not guaranteed in the home state.

How to prepare for KVS PRT/TGT/PGT
01Teaching Methodology carries 40 marks β do not skip it
The Teaching Methodology & Pedagogy section (40 questions) is entirely theoretical and scoring. Topics like NCF 2005, NEP 2020, RTE Act 2009, Bloom's Taxonomy and assessment methods are tested every year. Study a dedicated KVS pedagogy book and solve 200+ previous pedagogy questions.
02GK must include KVS-specific facts
The GK section occasionally tests KVS history (year of establishment: 1963), number of KVs, KVS motto ("Tattvam Poshi"), schemes run by KVS and famous KV alumni. Add a 1-page KVS factsheet to your GK notes.
03Subject section is 80 marks β the main battle
The Subject Knowledge section (80 questions for TGT/PGT) determines who gets the top ranks. Study your subject from NCERT textbooks Classes 9-12 (for TGT) or graduation level (for PGT) and solve previous KVS subject papers. Subject + Pedagogy combined = 120 marks out of 180 β it is where the race is won.
04Computer Literacy (10 marks) is free marks with 2 days of prep
Basic computer questions (MS Office, Internet, email, networking) need only 2-3 days of revision. Use any standard computer awareness guide. Ten marks from 10 questions with 0.25 negative is very achievable with minimal effort.
05NEP 2020 is now heavily tested in Teaching Methodology
The National Education Policy 2020 is a major topic in the KVS Teaching Methodology section. Study: 5+3+3+4 structure, multilingual education, competency-based assessment, FLN (Foundational Literacy & Numeracy), and NIPUN Bharat. At least 5-8 questions in recent papers have come directly from NEP 2020.

KVS PRT/TGT/PGT: frequently asked questions
Is CTET required for KVS PGT?
No. CTET is required for PRT (Paper I) and TGT (Paper II), but not for PGT. PGT requires post-graduation in the relevant subject and a B.Ed degree, without a TET requirement.
Is there an interview in KVS recruitment?
Only for PGT posts. PRT and TGT selection is based purely on the written exam. Whether there is an interview for all or specific KVS posts may vary by notification β always check the current advertisement.
Can KVS teachers be transferred across India?
Yes. KVS teachers have an all-India transfer liability. Transfers happen every 3-7 years based on administrative needs or personal requests. This is a key characteristic of the KVS service β you may be posted far from your home state.
What is the KVS TGT salary per month in hand?
TGT Pay Level 7: Basic βΉ44,900 + DA (current rate, revised quarterly) + HRA (varies by city: 8-24%) + TA. For a Delhi posting, in-hand comes to approximately βΉ65,000-βΉ80,000. For smaller cities with lower HRA, it is approximately βΉ60,000-βΉ70,000.
How many vacancies does KVS release typically?
KVS released over 13,000 vacancies across all posts in a 2022 recruitment cycle. Regular cycles bring 3,000-8,000 posts across PRT, TGT and PGT. KVS recruitment frequency is irregular β a large cycle may not recur for 2-3 years.
What is the KVS PRT eligibility?
Senior Secondary (12th) with 50% marks + 2-year D.El.Ed or 4-year B.El.Ed or equivalent + CTET Paper I. Age: up to 30 years (general).
Does KVS have its own TET or does it require CTET?
KVS requires CTET (central level TET). It does not accept state TET certificates. CTET Paper I for PRT and CTET Paper II for TGT are mandatory.
What are the KVS overseas postings?
KVS runs schools in Moscow, Kathmandu, Vienna, Tehran and a few other cities for the children of Indian diplomats and embassy staff. Overseas postings are offered to senior KVS teachers on rotation and come with additional allowances.
Is the KVS exam online or offline?
The KVS written exam is conducted as an online CBT (Computer-Based Test) at designated exam centres across India.
What is the difference between KVS and NVS teacher recruitment?
Both are central government teaching organisations. KVS (Kendriya Vidyalaya) focuses on central government employees' children and has over 1,250 schools. NVS (Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti) runs Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas for rural meritorious students. Both have similar pay scales but different exam patterns and school culture.
