About Engineering exams
Engineering graduates can join premier research organisations and public-sector undertakings, or pursue M.Tech at IITs and NITs. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is the gateway to most of these, while ISRO, BARC and DRDO also run their own recruitment.

How it works
The Engineering selection process
GATE exam
A 3-hour computer-based test in one of 30 subject papers. The score is valid for three years.
Use the GATE score
Apply to IITs/NITs for M.Tech through COAP/CCMT, or to PSUs that recruit through GATE scores.
PSU / research interview
Shortlisted candidates face group discussion and/or interview. Final selection weighs GATE score and interview.
Direct recruitment exams
ISRO, BARC (OCES/DGFS) and DRDO CEPTAM run their own written tests or use GATE scores to shortlist, followed by interviews.
FAQs
Engineering exams: frequently asked questions
How long is the GATE score valid?
Three years from the date of result announcement.
Is there negative marking in GATE?
Only for MCQs: one-third of a mark for 1-mark questions and two-thirds for 2-mark questions. MSQ and NAT questions have no negative marking.
Can final-year students take GATE?
Yes. Students in the third or higher year of their undergraduate degree are eligible.
Do all PSUs recruit through GATE?
Many do (such as NTPC, IOCL, PGCIL and BHEL), but not all, and each PSU decides its own cut-offs and branches every year.
