What is CRPF CT/CISF HC?
CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) is India's largest Central Armed Police Force with over 3 lakh personnel. CRPF Constable/Technical/Tradesmen and Head Constable recruitments are conducted directly by CRPF for various categories of posts including Constable (Technical), Head Constable (Ministerial), Constable (GD in CAPFs via SSC), and specialised tradesmen posts.
CRPF operates across India in counter-insurgency (J&K, Northeast), Naxal-affected areas (Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand), VIP/Parliament protection, disaster relief and election security. A CRPF Constable deployed in operational areas receives additional field area allowances significantly above the base salary.
Recruitment for Constable/Technical/Tradesmen follows a standard pattern: Computer-Based Test (CBT) for shortlisting, Physical Standard Test (PST) and Physical Efficiency Test (PET), Trade/Skill Test (for technical and tradesmen posts), and Medical Examination. Constable GD posts in all CAPFs (BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, NIA, NSG) are also recruited through SSC's annual GD Constable examination.
The CBT for CRPF technical/tradesmen posts tests General Intelligence (25q), General Awareness (25q), Elementary Mathematics (25q) and English/Hindi (25q) β 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours. For specialised trades (electrician, carpenter, cook, tailor), a trade test demonstrates hands-on skill. Head Constable (Ministerial) posts require a typing/stenography test.
A CRPF Constable draws Pay Level 3 (βΉ21,700-βΉ69,100 basic). With HRA, DA, ration allowance and field area allowances during deployment, in-hand earnings are approximately βΉ30,000-βΉ45,000 per month in non-field postings and significantly higher in operational deployments. Free accommodation at CRPF camps is provided.
How it works
CRPF CT/CISF HC selection process
Computer-based test (CBT)
100 questions in 2 hours. Sections: General Intelligence & Reasoning (25q), General Awareness (25q), Elementary Mathematics (25q), English or Hindi (25q based on application). Negative marking: 0.25 per wrong answer. Used to shortlist candidates for PST/PET.
Physical Standard Test (PST) & Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
PST: Height (Men: 170 cm general, 165 cm SC/ST/OBC/Hill area; Women: 157 cm), Chest (Men: 80-85 cm), Weight as per norms. PET: Timed run (1.6 km for men, 800 m for women) plus other events. Specific benchmarks vary by post category β check the current notification.
Trade / skill test
For Constable Technical and Tradesmen posts: hands-on demonstration of the relevant trade skill (e.g., wiring for Electrician, cooking for Cook, tailoring for Tailor). Trade test is qualifying β pass/fail. For Head Constable Ministerial: typing test (English or Hindi) at specified speed.
Medical examination & DV
Detailed medical at a CRPF or government hospital. Checks vision (distance and near), colour vision, hearing, weight and general fitness. Candidates with colour-blindness are typically ineligible for operational posts. Document Verification: educational certificates, category certificate, domicile, age proof.

Strategy
How to prepare for CRPF CT/CISF HC
01Prepare for both CRPF direct and SSC GD simultaneously
CRPF direct recruitment for Technical/Tradesmen posts and SSC GD Constable exam (for all CAPFs including CRPF) have similar written exam patterns. Preparing for both together is efficient. SSC GD is a larger exam with more vacancies (50,000-80,000 per cycle) and is more competitive. Prioritise based on your trade skills.
02Physical fitness is non-negotiable
CRPF is an operational force β PET standards are strict. The 1.6 km run (men) and 800 m run (women) must be cleared within specified times. Start running and physical training 3-4 months before the recruitment date. Chest expansion (80 to 85 cm) is also specifically checked for male candidates.
03GK: add CRPF and CAPF-specific facts
CRPF CBT GK often includes questions specific to central police forces: CRPF founding year (1939), CRPF DG, CRPF operations (Operation Greyhound in Naxal areas), CAPF headquarters, famous operations. Add a dedicated CAPF section to your GK notes.
04For trade posts: practice the trade skill before the test
If applying for Constable Technical (Electrician, Motor Mechanic, Carpenter etc.), the trade test is a hands-on practical examination. Practise your trade skills β if you are an electrician, practise wiring circuits quickly and safely. If applying for Cook, practise cooking under time pressure. Trade test failure eliminates you regardless of written score.
05Head Constable Ministerial: typing speed is the bottleneck
For HC (Min) posts requiring a typing test, a minimum typing speed (typically 35 WPM in English or equivalent in Hindi) is mandatory. If your typing speed is below this, practise daily on a keyboard using typing speed software. This is one of the few government exams where a specific software skill directly determines selection.

FAQs
CRPF CT/CISF HC: frequently asked questions
Is the CRPF trade test qualifying?
Yes. The trade test (for Constable Technical and Tradesmen posts) is qualifying β pass or fail. It does not add marks to your merit. However, failing the trade test disqualifies you even if you top the written exam. Treat it as seriously as the written paper.
Can women apply for CRPF Constable posts?
Yes. Many CRPF and CISF posts have separate vacancies for women. Women's physical standards (height, PET events) are different from men's and generally have lower benchmarks. Check the specific notification for women vacancy counts in each post category.
Where is the CRPF CT notification published?
On the official CRPF recruitment website (crpf.gov.in) and in the Employment News. For SSC GD Constable (which recruits for CRPF among other CAPFs), notifications are published on ssc.gov.in.
What is the difference between SSC GD Constable and CRPF direct Constable?
SSC GD Constable exam recruits Constable (GD) for all CAPFs (BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, NIA, NSG, SSF) β it is a combined exam with massive vacancies. CRPF direct recruitment covers Technical and Tradesmen posts requiring specific skills. Both lead to CRPF service but are different post categories.
What is the CRPF Constable salary?
Pay Level 3 (βΉ21,700 basic). With DA + HRA (varies by posting city) + Ration Allowance, in-hand is approximately βΉ30,000-βΉ40,000 per month at a non-operational posting. At operational/field postings (J&K, Northeast, Naxal areas), additional field area allowances can add βΉ8,000-βΉ17,000/month. Free accommodation is provided at CRPF camps.
What is the age limit for CRPF Constable?
18-23 years for Constable (Technical/Tradesmen) in direct CRPF recruitment. SC/ST: 18-28 years, OBC: 18-26 years. For SSC GD Constable: 18-23 years general, with standard SSC relaxations. Exact ages are specified in each notification β always verify.
What is the height requirement for CRPF?
Men (General/OBC/SC): 170 cm. Men (SC/ST/Hill area candidates, Gorkha, Northeast): 165 cm. Women (General/SC/OBC): 157 cm. Women (ST/Hill area): 155 cm. These are general guidelines β confirm from the specific post notification.
Is posting in Naxal or J&K areas compulsory in CRPF?
CRPF deploys personnel across India based on operational needs. New recruits can be posted anywhere including Naxal-affected areas (Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand) or J&K. Operational area deployments come with additional field allowances but are part of the CRPF service commitment.
Can I request a specific posting in CRPF?
CRPF postings are based on service requirements and battalion assignments, not personal preference. Transfers and postings are at the discretion of CRPF administration. Home state posting is not guaranteed.
What is the CRPF training period after selection?
Selected Constable recruits undergo basic training at CRPF Group Training Centres for approximately 9 months. Training covers physical fitness, weapon handling, drill, law, first aid and communication. After passing training, they are posted to operational battalions.
