What is UP Police Constable?
UP Police Constable (Civil Police) recruitment is conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB). With Uttar Pradesh having India's largest population and one of the largest state police forces (over 2 lakh personnel), UP Police Constable is one of the biggest recruitment drives in the country β each cycle notifying 30,000-60,000 vacancies.
The post is open to 12th-pass candidates aged 18-22 years (men) and 18-25 years (women). A Constable in UP Police performs frontline policing duties β patrolling, law enforcement, crime prevention, traffic management, disaster response and public order maintenance across UP's 75 districts.
Selection has four stages: Written Examination (150 questions, 300 marks, 2 hours), Document Verification & Physical Standard Test (PST), Physical Efficiency Test (PET, qualifying) and Medical Examination. Final merit is based entirely on the written exam β the PET is qualifying. The written exam is in Hindi only.
The written exam tests four sections: General Hindi (37.5q equivalent, 75m), General Knowledge (37.5q, 75m), Numerical Ability & Mental Ability (37.5q, 75m) and Mental Aptitude & Reasoning/Intelligence (37.5q, 75m). Each correct answer carries 2 marks; wrong answers are penalised 0.5 marks (negative marking). Total: 150 questions, 300 marks.
UP Police Constable draws Pay Level 3 (βΉ21,700-βΉ69,100 basic) with Uttar Pradesh government DA and allowances. With all allowances, in-hand salary is approximately βΉ28,000-βΉ38,000 per month in a non-metro UP posting. Government accommodation at police lines is available in most district postings.

Merit-based shortlisting from written exam. PST: Men (General/OBC/SC): 168 cm, Men (ST): 160 cm, Women (General/OBC/SC): 152 cm, Women (ST): 147 cm. Weight: as per UP Police norms. Documents: 12th certificate, age proof, domicile, category certificate, NIOS/equivalent validity.

Physical Efficiency Test (PET, qualifying)
Men: 4.8 km run in 25 minutes (qualifying). Women: 2.4 km run in 14 minutes (qualifying). PET is qualifying β pass/fail only. Final merit does not include PET marks. Candidates failing PET are eliminated regardless of written score.

Conducted at a government hospital. Checks vision, hearing, general fitness and absence of physical defects. Candidates with colour-blindness are typically disqualified for police roles.

01General Hindi is a full 75-mark section β master it
UP Police Constable written exam is Hindi-only and General Hindi carries 75 marks. Topics like Sandhi, Samas, Muhavare (idioms), Paryayvachi (synonyms), Vilom (antonyms) and Vakya Shuddhi (sentence correction) are tested every year. Use a dedicated UP Police Hindi book and practice 300+ previous Hindi grammar questions.
02UP-specific GK in the GK section is very high-weight
The GK section includes a heavy UP component: UP geography (Ganga belt, districts, crops like sugarcane and wheat), UP culture (Lucknow Kathak, Varanasi ghats, Kumbh Mela), UP economy (industrial zones, MSME clusters) and UP government schemes (Abhyudaya Yojana, CM Kisan Sanman). Prepare a separate 10-page UP GK revision sheet.
03Start the PET run from Day 1
The 4.8 km run in 25 minutes (for men) averages 5 minutes 12 seconds per km β which is faster than most people's walking pace. Without consistent training, clearing the PET is not guaranteed. Begin running daily from the day you start preparing. Build to completing 5 km under 24 minutes comfortably, giving yourself a 1-minute buffer on exam day.
04Solve 10 previous UPPRPB Constable papers
UP Police Constable papers from previous cycles (2018, 2019, 2022) show a consistent pattern. Hindi grammar topics, UP GK facts and reasoning question types repeat heavily. Previous papers are the best preparation resource β they directly simulate the actual exam difficulty and format.
05Negative marking is 0.50 per wrong β attempt 130-140 questions
Each correct answer is +2 marks; each wrong is -0.50. A wrong answer costs 1/4 of a correct answer β similar to most SSC exams. Only skip if you have absolutely no idea. Use elimination: if you can rule out 2 options, attempt. Track your wrong answers in mock tests and aim for 85%+ accuracy.
