SSC CPO SI/ASI guide

What is SSC CPO SI/ASI?

SSC CPO (Central Police Organisations) SI/ASI Examination, conducted by the Staff Selection Commission, recruits Sub-Inspectors in Delhi Police and Assistant Sub-Inspectors in central armed police forces (CAPF) β€” BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP and SSB. It is one of the most prestigious uniformed officer-rank entries available to graduates, offering direct entry into the officer cadre of India's largest police forces.

The SI in Delhi Police and ASI in CAPFs are Group C, gazetted, non-ministerial posts. An SI in Delhi Police is a frontline officer who directly leads teams, handles investigations and manages law-and-order situations. ASIs in CAPFs serve at border posts, industrial security, jungle warfare operations and disaster response β€” offering a challenging, purpose-driven career.

The selection has four stages: Paper I (written, 200 marks), Physical Standard Test (PST) and Physical Endurance Test (PET), Paper II (English, 200 marks) and Medical + Document Verification. Final merit is based on Paper I + Paper II combined. A driving licence is additionally required for the Delhi Police SI role.

Paper I tests four subjects with 50 questions each: General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Knowledge & General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension. Negative marking is 0.25 per wrong answer. Paper II tests English Language & Comprehension β€” 200 questions worth 200 marks in 2 hours.

An SI in Delhi Police draws Pay Level 6 (β‚Ή35,400-β‚Ή1,12,400 basic) plus Delhi Police allowances. With HRA, DA and other allowances, in-hand salary is approximately β‚Ή50,000-β‚Ή60,000 per month. CAPFs additionally provide free accommodation, rations, and field area allowances during operational deployments.

Strategy

How to prepare for SSC CPO SI/ASI

01Paper II English is the real merit differentiator

Both Paper I and Paper II marks are added. Many candidates score similarly in Paper I, but Paper II (English, 200 marks) separates top rankers. A 15-20 mark advantage in Paper II from strong English skills directly translates into rank. Read editorials daily, revise grammar rules and practice RC passages every day.

02Physical fitness must start 3-4 months before PET

The PET events β€” 1.6 km run, long jump and shot put for men β€” are physically demanding. Men must run 1.6 km in a specified time (typically under 6:30 minutes) and achieve minimum long jump and shot put distances. Start running 3-4 months before the exam date. Many candidates clear the written but get eliminated at PET due to poor fitness.

03GK current affairs: last 6 months is key

SSC CPO GK covers static GK + current affairs from the last 6 months. Focus on: government appointments, summit meetings, awards (Padma, Nobel), sports championships, science news and important days. Use a monthly current affairs capsule and revise it every Sunday.

04Reasoning and GK together are 100 marks β€” score 80+ here

General Intelligence (50q/50m) and GK (50q/50m) are the two highest-scoring sections if well-prepared. Reasoning patterns in SSC CPO repeat heavily from previous papers. Solve 8-10 previous CPO papers for reasoning to master the exact question types.

05Driving licence for Delhi Police SI β€” get it before PET

Male candidates for the Delhi Police SI post must hold a valid driving licence for LMV (motorcycle and car) at the time of PET. If you are targeting Delhi Police, apply for a driving licence early β€” it takes 1-3 months from driving school enrolment to final licence.
