What is SSC CHSL?
SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level) recruits 12th-pass candidates for Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA), Data Entry Operator (DEO), and Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant posts in central government offices and departments.
It is one of the highest-volume exams for 12th-pass students, with 3β5 lakh candidates appearing each year for roughly 3,000β5,000 vacancies. Because there is no interview, every mark in the Mains counts directly toward your merit rank.
Selection is through a Tier 1 qualifying computer-based test, a Tier 2 merit-deciding CBT with a descriptive/computer-based writing module, and a qualifying skill or typing test depending on the post.
SSC CHSL salary (post-7th Pay Commission) starts at Pay Level 2 (βΉ19,900) for LDC/JSA and Pay Level 4 (βΉ25,500) for DEO (Grade A). Gross in-hand pay after HRA, DA and TA typically ranges from βΉ28,000ββΉ40,000 depending on city and post.
Posting is mostly in Delhi for central secretariat posts but also in regional offices of income tax, customs, CBIC and MEA across India. A good posting + job security + pension makes CHSL highly sought after by 12th-pass aspirants.
How it works

Strategy
How to prepare for SSC CHSL
01Clear Tier 1 with a high score
Although Tier 1 is qualifying, a high score helps your confidence and pace. Target 160+/200 in practice mocks.
02Focus Tier 2 Session II English
Session II English carries heavy marks. Practice one reading comprehension passage and two grammar sections daily.
03Prepare for the typing test early
Many candidates clear CBT but fail the typing test. Start typing practice (35 WPM in English) from month 1. Use free tools like Typing.com.
04Master Class 10 Maths
CHSL Quant is Class 10 level. Complete NCERT Class 9 and 10 Maths first, then practice topic-wise SSC questions from previous years.
05Revise GK from SSC-specific books
SSC static GK (capitals, books & authors, awards, national parks) repeats every year. Use Lucent's GK or any SSC-specific static GK book and revise it twice before the exam.
