SSC MTS guide
What is SSC MTS?
SSC MTS (Multi-Tasking Non-Technical Staff) is the entry-level central government exam open to 10th-pass candidates. It recruits Multi-Tasking Staff (Group C, non-gazetted) for central departments and Havaldars for CBIC and CBN.
MTS is popular because of its low eligibility barrier β only a 10th pass is required β making it accessible to millions of students who want government job security without a graduation degree.
The exam has a single computer-based test divided into two sessions: Session I (Reasoning and Numeracy, no negative marking) and Session II (General Awareness and English, with negative marking). Havaldar candidates must also pass a Physical Efficiency Test.
SSC MTS pay is at Pay Level 1 (βΉ18,000 basic). After DA, HRA, TA and other allowances, gross in-hand pay is approximately βΉ22,000ββΉ28,000 depending on city. Havaldar is at Pay Level 1 as well but the job profile involves physical duties at CBIC/CBN.

Strategy
How to prepare for SSC MTS
01Prioritise Session II
Session II marks decide your merit rank. Focus on General Awareness (current affairs + static GK) and basic English grammar. Aim for 40+/50 in Session II.
02Use Session I for accuracy
No negative marking in Session I means you should attempt all 40 questions. Practice all questions within 45 minutes with 90%+ accuracy.
03Revise NCERT Class 6β10 for GK
SSC MTS GK questions are mostly Class 8β10 NCERT level. Read the History, Geography, Science, and Polity sections once through.
04Practice current affairs daily
General Awareness in Session II includes current events from the past 6β8 months. Read a GK digest or watch daily current affairs videos for 15 minutes.
